In his return to Texas A&M, former U.S. secretary of defense and former A&M president Robert M. Gates held a media availability session Wednesday at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center as a prelude to his speech at the William Waldo Cameron Forum on Public Affairs.

In the above question-and-answer session, Gates (affectionately known on TexAgs as ranger65) discussed his new book: "Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service" and the things he learned in Washington.

Read his first book. He is a disappointment. He and Obama are a major cause of the rise of ISIS, IMO.

Really mods/staff.... you removed my first post completely without any explanation or trace that it ever existed, so I will try to repeat it's contents whose validity cannot be denied.

He is a big government liberal whose power derives and manifest itself in the very Military-Industrial Complex in which he is entrenched within while serving at the behest of at the least a Muslim sympathizer and at worst complicit in the spread of Terrorism.

And, he is also a major factor in the destruction of the Boy Scouts as of late.

(again, please refute these facts and just don't delete post if you please. Thank you)

Well, I'd assume this was a big sarcastic joke, but then I realized that this is TexAgs and so this is probably a serious post. It made me a little sad for you.

Refutations begin:

  • If he's a liberal, he's one who sure likes voting for Republicans. I looked up his voting record and he's voted exclusively in republican primaries since the 1970s.
  • For a big government official he sure liked to save money. He cut the F-22 and FCS programs and tried to get the Navy to cut sub development. These weren't popular cuts among the military. In 2010 he started an initiative to save $100 billion over 5 years (although I don't know how that's gone since he retired).
  • He doesn't have any power anymore. He retired in 2011, so using present tense verbs like "derives" and "is" as if he's still in office makes you look like an idiot.
  • He was Secretary of Defense. Of course whatever power he had was derived from the military. Water is wet.
  • I won't even touch the Muslim sympathizer thing, cause that's a whole 'nother level of stupidity.
  • I'm just going to assume you're referring to ISIS when you say he's "complicit in the spread of terrorism". The Syrian civil war started in March 2011. Gates retired on July 1st, 2011. So he had a good 3 months to have helped us make better decisions in that regard. You seem confused, so here's a helpful video. If you're referring to something farther back than ISIS, you'll remember that the Iraq invasion which de-stabilized the entire region happened over 3.5 years before he was appointed.
  • The Boy Scouts still exist. They have not been destroyed. You can verify this by going to their website.
  • Some Eagle Scouts, such as myself, think that gays should be allowed to enjoy scouting just like their straight friends.
  • Fact - (noun) a thing that is indisputably the case. I think the word you were looking for was "Opinion" whose definition is: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. Pay careful attention to the bolded part.

Interesting. True or not, I don't know, but interesting.

I wonder, sometimes, if Aggieland's culture of "military worship" blinds us to some very ugly truths.

I doubt this to be true. There are numerous reasons why Bonfire wasn't allowed back on Texas A&M campus, but Gates was not the biggest reason. If I recall, the state Attorney General put a moratorium on Bonfire on campus due to on going litigation.

Also, during the Gates presidency, a student organization promoting Bonfire was allowed to exist (Bonfire Coalition) and also lifted a previous moratorium on selling merchandise referencing Bonfire.

Gates lifted A&M up, paved the way to take out OBL He took the mess Rummy left and made some progress. Not convinced that unless we prevented Maliki from winning the election we could have prevented some manifestation of ISIS.

I'd blame more Hagel, Kerry, Podesta, who have been pretty incompetent We have to collaborate with Arabs, Turks, and Kurds to clean up the ISIS mess. Having said that more Americans were killed last year by furniture than ISIS. Carpet bomb the Lay-Z-Boys!

Wow, just wow. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but this is some ascinine stuff.

There is no way that Gates did everything right. I would never try and carry that point forward, but this man has tackled some of the largest problems in the world over his career. And the second go round he didn't even seek it, he was asked twice by a Presidnet at war and he answered the call. As much as I disagree with the premise of the many detractors - it is the spirit of ignorance and disdain that I find even more disappointing and intellectually shallow. The devolution of thought is at an appalling level.

You mean the "ISIS mess" WE had a hand in creating? Ever ask yourself why USA might want to destabilize Syria??? Hint: it has to do with Russia, gas pipelines, and Europe's insatiable appetite for LOTS AND LOTS of natural gas.

Well struck!

Gates is one of the best political leaders of this generation. He is respected by a democrat administration as a republican appointee and by a military whose budget he cut. Respect nothing if not how hard that is.

He doesnt't change his principles to suit a party line and makes everyone more accountable.

If anyone questions the impact of his leadership, look no further than the A&M admin ever since he left.
