Aggie Volleyball Outclasses Ole Miss in 3-0 Sweep
Over the past month, it looked like the Aggie volleyball team was wandering in the desert. Going 4-4 over the course of the last eight matches, Texas A&M was unable to string together consecutive wins for almost four weeks.
That all changed on Sunday.
After sweeping Auburn on the road on Wednesday, the Aggies returned to Reed Arena hungry to put the struggles of the last month behind them. With another sweep and an all-around dominant performance against Ole Miss, it looks like they might be in the rear-view mirror.
Texas A&M (9-5, 2-1 SEC) put on a show against the Rebels (15-4, 1-3 SEC), trailing for all of one point Sunday afternoon in a 3-0 drubbing.
The Ags started fast, jumping out to an 11-5 lead in the first set behind 5 kills from sophomore Kiara McGee. That was just the beginning, however, as the Aggies put together an 8-3 run to push the lead to eleven.
With the lead firmly in hand, Texas A&M cruised to a 25-13 win in the first set and hit .500 along the way while holding Ole Miss to a .105 hitting percentage.
Ole Miss hung with the Texas A&M for longer in the second set, but defensive miscues and a relentless line of Aggie attackers kept the Rebels from pulling within striking distance. McGee added five more kills in the second frame en route to a 25-20 victory.
The Rebels won the first point of the third set and took their first lead of the day, but were unable to hold onto it. Texas A&M responded with a three-point run, and held onto the lead for the rest of the match.
Spurred by a ferocious defensive effort at the net by Jazzmin Babers and Ashlie Reasor, Texas A&M held Ole Miss to a -.056 hitting percentage in the third set and bulled it's way to another 25-13 win to complete the sweep.
Head coach Laurie Corbelli enjoyed seeing her team come together after the trials of the past few weeks.
"It's a pure joy. It's a dream come true," she said. "I think so often that all these players are so good and so talented, and when they all play well on the same day, how very difficult it is to beat us."
With two consecutive wins for the first time in almost a month, the Aggies are feeling pretty good about themselves heading into the rest of October. As the weather cools down, the schedule heats up, and the next test is a big one.
The Ags will take a trip to Gainesville on Friday, looking to keep building momentum, but it won't be an easy task against the #5 Florida Gators.
