Key quotes from Jackie Sherrill interview

“I think everybody is excited to get started. There are two or three things with this first game. This isn't a typical opener, because your players have been excited. Whenever you open with a quality opponent, which Arizona State certainly is, the attention to detail and the focus is different. It’s not like you are opening with Sam Houston. This really focuses the players, gets them excited. Even the students on campus are excited, as well as us old guys in the media. The one thing we have to tap the brakes on, I remember when I first took the job as head coach and AD, coach Bryant called me and told me, “Jackie, you aren't going to have to tell anyone how good you are, the Aggies are going to tell them for you.” Coaches don't win, players do. The most important thing is to put the coaches in the right position. I’ve always questioned why you would have talented players on offense or defense that could move other to the other side and be dominant.”

“I’m excited that Chavis recognized that there were players that weren’t getting a lot of playing time offensively, but could play on defense and vice versa. We had a lot of those. We had a lot of kids like Rod Bernstine, Richmond Webb, Johnny Holland that played different positions than the one they came here in.”

“(Chavis’ Defense) will be exciting. There’s players, there’s talent. It’s hard to walk into a program and find kids like Hall and Garrett on the same team. You have to understand, you’ve got to be able to contain, and 10 and 15 can do that and rush the passer. Then, you have to have a free safety, an inside nose guard or tackle and a dominating linebacker. If you have those, it doesn't matter where you put the rest of the guys. I’ve always felt like people came up with the spread offense, but we never shut the receivers down at the line. That’s one thing that will be different, the corners are going to be playing man. They are going to walk up and latch on. So now, you’ve reduced the field by taking out the extra yards. If they want to throw take off’s all day, let them. You aren't going to complete more than 50% of them anyway, but if you have a good corner and can pressure the quarterback, that fade route becomes a lot tougher than people think.”

“I think he will use Garrett and Hall in different ways to get pressure on the quarterback. My only question with the defense is inside. Those two inside tackles and then who are those inside linebackers and how good will they be?”

“You know Kyler is going to play. When is he going to play, and how are they going to use him, is what’s interesting to me. They have a gameplan for it, but I can tell you, I’ve been watching Kyler since the 4th grade and he has wowed me every time. He is going to excite people.”

“We won’t know what the chemistry of this team is until midseason. But this game is so important, because it will either jump start you and put you up, mentally too. If we don’t win, then all the sudden, you have to regroup.”

“The biggest key, because you have so many people on the defense that havent played together in this scheme, is how sound can we be? We can’t just turn people loose. There’s no doubt we will be aggressive, but how sound? You can put all the pressure you want on the quarterback, but you have to be sound in the secondary.”

“Offensively, my impression is that we will be a much stronger running team. So I think we will see the running backs, particularly with Tra Carson, will be better than a lot of people think. It’s so important to be good in the trenches. Look at a Chavis defense and how many defensive linemen dominated, then went onto the NFL. At A&M a few years ago, they were so good because of the offensive line. You have to give your quarterback an opportunity, but you also have to be able to run the football. I really feel good about them being able to do both. There is no question about the receivers, so I’m excited.”

“Will Brandon Williams be the cornerback that everyone thinks he can be? The good thing about Brandon is that he’s a big corner. He’s 6 foot, 205 and when he gets his hands on you, he’s not going to let you go. Plus, he’s the fastest kid on the team, so you aren't going to outrun him.”
