Notes from Billy's breakdown
- One of the best football players in Texas high school history. Three state titles, zero losses in his high school career and has a chance to win the starting job in year one at A&M. Will have to beat a likely future NFL pick in Kyle Allen.
- Is at A&M to win the starting job and has learned the offense quickly, which signifies his desire and competitiveness. He has impressed with his quick release, accuracy and ability to throw a catchable ball. Hasn't shown his mobility in summer workouts yet, as it hasn't been required to this point. His presence will make both he and Kyle Allen better through competition.
- Much like Johnny Manziel, Kyler is a winner. In the huddle, everyone believes that he will carry them to victory. He is a moment guy, which happens with some people doesn’t with others. There are lots of NFL quarterbacks who are great but aren't moment guys. With Kyler, the question becomes, will those moments happen in 2015 or later?
- Because of his talent level Kyler has an open competition, in what would otherwise be a guaranteed back up role entering fall camp. Kyle Allen got a big head start by playing well last year, even reaching exceptional at times. It will be a tall task for Kyler to start against Arizona State, but he could very well be on the field during the season opener.
- After the Arkansas game, the layout for the quarterback battle will be much clearer. If a win over Arizona State establishes intrigue going into the Arkansas game, that could be a good thing for the coaching staff.
