G Guerrieri on starting 2-0, injury updates, this weekend's matches
On the first weekend of the season...
“The season started off on a good note, we got a win against a really good opponent, Dayton. Dayton is a team that has been the top team in the Atlantic 10 conference and a team that is probably going to make the NCAA tournament this year.
“I thought that the players did a great job at adjusting to the things that we talked about after [Friday’s] match and we defended better as a team and created a lot more chances.”
On starting the year 2-0...
“All in all it was a really good weekend. I think that even though we haven’t been 2-0 even as good as this team has been and as many championships this team has won, we really haven’t been 2-0 since I think 2007 so it’s a good omen for a good season.”
On injury updates...
“Karlie Mueller went down with an ankle and she’ll be out for a couple of weeks, maybe. Jordan Day kind of a collision but nothing malicious by the other team or anything like that and she’s doing better already. Then Mikayla Harvey just a hyper-extension and she will be back in a couple of weeks too.
“We won’t have some of these players immediately but we don’t lose them for the season and they will be alright especially as we go into the conference season.”
On starting the year by playing an exhibition match against defending champion UCLA...
“Well hopefully it was a good wake up call to our players that we are as good as [UCLA], you know we gave up some goals that are easily adjustable. You know we played in a different shape than we played with before.
"I think a lot of teams this time of year you know optimism runs eternal, everyone is going to go undefeated and everyone is going to have an amazing season but there’s a small number of teams that can actually say that and really mean it and I think that we are one of those teams.”
On matches coming up this weekend...
“I expect us to win this game [UCF] and take care of our business but it’s a good opponent that I think is going to win their conference and make it to the NCAA tournament as well.”
