B/CS wine scene enticing residents & visitors alike

While wine in Texas isn’t a new thing, the number of Texas-produced wines as well as wineries have exploded over the past 10 years.

Aggieland is no exception to that trend, offering a wine experience of some form or other to visitors and residents alike. No longer are wine enthusiasts relegated to getting a glass at just a fine dining establishment — wine bars are offering the experience of enjoying a glass that’s from a winery as close as just a few miles away.

And festivals like Texas Reds are making Bryan-College Station a place of interest for many grape lovers.

It is estimated that Texas produced three million gallons of wine in 2012 at 275 commercial wineries, which adds an economic impact to the state of around $1.8 billion. And beyond that, the Texas Wine & Grape Grower’s Association estimates that it brought in 1.43 million tourists to the state as well. Locally, wineries like Messina Hof are attracting visitors to the area daily.

Serving up wine since 1983 in East Bryan, Messina Hof has expanded to include a restaurant with delicious cuisine, a bed and breakfast and a wine bar that keeps hours friendly for those that want to just grab a glass after work.

Peach Creek Vineyards is a new face in the area, crafting wines in South College Station since 2010. Even a short drive from the B/CS city limits, one can visit places like Bernhardt Winery, Pleasant Hill Winery, Retreat Hill Winery and Saddlehorn Winery. It may not be the Sonoma Valley in California, but one could certainly make an afternoon of tasting wines while enjoying the sights of Aggieland and the Brazos Valley.

If you’re just looking to sample some of these Texas-crafted wines while you’re staying in town (or even locals wanting to get sip!), wine bars and restaurants are carrying these labels — and some almost exclusively carry only Texas wines.

Downtown Uncorked, The Wine Bar at the Benjamin Knox Gallery and restaurants such as The Village Café, Veritas, The Republic, Amico Nave and Christopher’s all offer at least one Texas wine and even a select few from the local wineries mentioned above.

My Friends own the Pleasant Hill Winery in Brenham, good people. I would suggest checking it out.
