Recruiting notes: DL update + 2024 QBs emerging
- Even in the face of overwhelming Oklahoma momentum, the Aggies haven't mailed it in with Katy Paetow DL David Hicks yet. A couple of sources have told me today that the entire A&M defensive staff plus Jimbo Fisher were on an extended Zoom call with Hicks and his family last night. Without getting into the details, it sounds like the call went as well as it could have. It remains to be seen if it will have any affect on DJ's immediate decision, but I do think it has set them up well for the final months of this recruiting cycle. In other words, nobody has come out and said the Aggies overtook OU's perceived top spot heading into decision day tomorrow, but the thought of this thing being done and dusted for the long haul would be naive. - Keep an eye on Friendswood DE/OLB Braylan Shelby. A trusted source in Houston thought the Aggies could get back in that mix and commented that a visit to College Station next month wouldn't surprise him. Shelby committed to USC over Texas and Texas A&M in early August. - Still feel like the Aggies are trending well for Converse Judson DL Johnny Bowens based on what I've gotten the past 2-3 days. - Similarly to Shelby, I'll be paying attention to see if the Aggies jump back in on recruiting Ft Bend Marshall DL and TCU commit Zach Chapman. The 6-6, 250 pounder is now fully healthy after missing his entire junior season with a knee injury - an injury that actually occurred at the end of his sophomore season that he somehow played through. I saw him play on Saturday and came away impressed with his overall power and athleticism. He really caught my eye as being all the way back to 100% when he hurdled the line and blocked a short field goal attempt. I wouldn't be surprised if him name pops up again on a visitor list. The Aggies have done well at Ft Bend Marshall and have great connections established there.- One final quick note at Ft Bend Marshall…Remember the name Dazjhon Taylor. He's a 2026 athlete that multiple members of the coaching staff told me about while I was down there. The way they phrased it was interesting, as well. In general, they said, "I think we've got the next Achane in our freshmen group." Take a look Catch and Take Off💨💪🏾 #mblock @MarshallBuffs @jarmant1 @espn @AggieFootball @LSUfootball @TexasFootball @ClemsonFB @UHCougarFB @AlabamaFTBL @texas_of @TexasSouthern pic.twitter.com/HfPNPe85Lk— Dazjhon Taylor (@DazjhonT21) September 2, 2022 Speed, accuracy, and precision💨💪🏾 #mblock @MarshallBuffs @jarmant1 @espn @AggieFootball @LSUfootball @TexasFootball @ClemsonFB @UHCougarFB @AlabamaFTBL @texas_of @TexasSouthern pic.twitter.com/R7AwujkBxY— Dazjhon Taylor (@DazjhonT21) September 2, 2022 - Lastly, I've got two 2024 quarterback names that are gaining steam in greater Houston: Tucker Parks of Klein Collins and Trey Owens at CyFair. I actually had an SEC position coach ask me today about both, and I suspect the Aggies will be monitoring them closely, as well.

TexAgs National Average Rating

The TexAgs National Average Rating is a proprietary formula that calculates an industry-wide aggregate rating for each recruiting prospect. The formula includes publicly listed grades, scores, ratings and rankings by national recruiting services, along with a TexAgs rating. Combining the data provides a rating for each prospect, which is then normalized to fit the TexAgs Rating 100-point scale.

The intent of this rating is to provide TexAgs readers with a comprehensive snapshot of how individual prospects rank nationally.

TexAgs Rating

The TexAgs Recruiting team of Billy Liucci, David Sandhop, Jason Howell, Ryan Brauninger and a host of recruiting interns attends more than 75 games each fall and observes and evaluates every major Texas A&M target, as well as most of the top 150 prospects in the State of Texas. From this evaluation the team draws a rating for each prospect on a scale between 70 and 100.

99-100: Elite national prospect (Five-star)

Considered one of the best prospects in the nation and a likely difference-maker at the collegiate level. Displays all of the physical skills to be a future All-American with potential to be an early-round NFL draft pick.

90-98: Elite state prospect (Four-star)

Considered one of the best 30-40 prospects in the state and a top 250 national prospect. Displays the physical skills to be a major early contributor at the collegiate level with high professional potential.

80-89: Quality prospect (Three-star)

Considered one of the best 100 prospects in the state and a top 500 national prospect. Displays the physical skills to develop into a contributor over the course of his college career. Has the ability to become a professional prospect over time with development.

70-79: Solid prospect (Two-star)

Considered one of the top 250 prospects in the state. Has the physical skills to be a potential contributor at a D-1 program over the course of his collegiate career with significant development. Professional potential is low.

Staff Predictions

The predictions represent which school each staff member believes will ultimately sign the recruit, and the confidence meter represents his level of certainty in that outcome.

Example #1

If the predicted school is Texas A&M and confidence is set to “High”, then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Texas A&M and I feel very certain about that.”

Example #2

If the predicted school is “Alabama” and confidence is set to “Low,” then the staff member is saying “I believe that this recruit will ultimately sign with Alabama, but I’m not very certain about that.”
