While many predict this to be the best D in the state, the LB's and DB's are the standouts. All very, very quick and will bring the wood.

There's a lot of talk about a kid named James Davis. He is currently only 14 years old, and 6'2 175lbs.

QB Grade- 83(B) (as a freshman)

Last Recorded 40 time- 4.7(summer going into the 9th grade)

I'm curious to see what kind of senior years Mandela Roberts and Dez Bryant put forth.

"Texas was tripping last time we talked," Hewitt said. "They said there was only one scholarship left and they wanted us to compete for it." - rivals snippet

Bryant will just be a junior. Coach Outlaw said he could be the one of the best players he has ever coached.

The kids I've read/heard to watch out for:

WR Dez Bryant, 6'2 200, Lufkin (Jr.)
WR-RB E.J. Shankle, 5'11 165 4.3, Lufkin
WR Ralph Thomas, 5'10 165, Lufkin (Jr.)
DL Roger Hurts, 5’11 230, Lufkin
DL Robert Taylor, 6’3 220, Lufkin
LB Mandela Roberts, 6’0 215, Lufkin
LB Stewart Willis, 5’11 215, Lufkin
DB Leonard Hewitt, 5’10 170 4.4, Lufkin
K Jamie Hernandez, Lufkin (Jr.)

Another kid the coaches are very high on is NG Lance Redd. Supposedly has a motor that won't quit.

Hernandez is already one of the top kickers in the state, kicking 50 yard FG's.

Shankle won second place in the state track meet in the 200 meters with a 21.59, so you know he's got wheels.

This is the kid to watch out for out of East Texas...

RB Vondrell McGee, 5'9 185 4.3, Longview

I read comprisons to Rodney Thomas. He gets in the open, and ... gone.

Lufkin's schedule for '06:

Aug. 20th @ Longview - scrimmage
Aug. 27th @ Humble - scrimmage
Sept. 2nd - Aldine Eisenhower - 7:30 P.M.
Sept. 9th @ Port Arthur Memorial - 7:30 P.M.
Sept. 16th @ Nacogdoches - 7:30 P.M.
Sept.23rd - Klein Forest - &:30 P.M.
October 1st @ Conroe - 4:00 P.M.
October 7th - Conroe Oak Ridge - 7:30 P.M.
October 15th @ Klein - 7:00 P.M. -
October 21 - Huntsville - 7:30 P.M.
October 28 - The Woodlands - 7:30 P.M.
November 4th @ Klein Collins- 7:30 P.M.

I will miss the Tyler Lee matchup. I understand that Lufkin was invited to play the game against the Ohio team, but Outlaw didn't want to go for various reasons, so Lee accepted. Hence the PA Memorial game. Not sure if that's accurate, but it's what I've heard. I understand the Lufkin/Lee matchup will be back on in '06.

You Lufkin fans have any problem at all with how little Outlaw gets out of his talent? I know, they won state w/Reggie... Fact is, at least 2 out of the last 3 years they should've won it again.

Probably 3 out of the last 4 years he had arguably more talent than anyone else in the state.

p.s. Not trying to start a fight. Think of it as me seeing how much potential that pipeline has, and their coach doesn't seem to get the most out of it.

I have a better question. How does Coach Dodge win year after year with such "inferior" talent?

Personal trainers?

Steriods?

Nevermind. I figured you'd get overly defensive.

Sorry, man.

p.s. Pretty bush to throw that steroids comment in there, btw. I wasn't being rude, that was however. If you think *nobody* at Lufkin High is on the juice, you probably need to re-evaluate reality.

You could argue that but do realize how hard it is to win state? The fact that he has them in the mix year in and year out with a .700+ winning percentage is all you need to know to understand he gets a lot from his players.
SnakePliskin

Sak, not overly sensitive at all, just asking a question just as you did. The rumors have been made against SLC, not Lufkin. When someone accuses Lufkin of using steriods, they will have the burdon of proving it wrong. I never read where SLC did anything to deflect the accusations, just denial.

And according to your original question, maybe you think Lufkin has enough talent without them to win every year IF they had a better coach?
Sakatha
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not really sure what to say. Funny thing about it is that I was actually complimenting the kids @ Lufkin.

Do I think with a better coach they would have better results with the same talent? Yup.

Was there any need to throw a shot at SLC? No, not really. I really should be used to it by now.
People from Southlake take crap regarding the athletics program from basically everyone. Most compliments are backhanded if they are given at all.

Sakatha,

I think what Outlaw does so well is develop his athletes into good football players and puts them in positions to win.
There are alot of teams that have the athletic ability that Lufkin has, but there's not many coaches that do a very good job of teaching their kids how to use that talent to be good football players.
Outlaw does a great job of it and as a result has alot of D-I coaches visiting every year.
You might be able to argue that he's not the BEST gameday coach, but you can't argue that players don't get better under him.
And the fact that he has Lufkin making a deep run in the playoffs year after year makes me think he's in the upper tier of high school gameday coaches.

I'll accept that. That's a much better response than 'Oh yeah!? Well your kids are on the juice!' Which is essentially what was said by the original poster.

Normally, I'm the last guy to take up for Southlake, but this steroids deal is just wrong. There was a mention in the Dallas Morning News that one kid (not a major contributor) had bought steroids. Since then, people have run with this to accuse the Southlake "team" of steroid abuse.

I'm not naive enough to think kids aren't using steroids, but there just isn't any credible evidence against Southlake, so why should they respond?
SnakePliskin
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sak, I answered an asinine question with an asinie question.

Name another coach that has taken his teams as deep in the playoffs year after year as Outlaw. Longview has as much, or more, talent each year, but Outlaw has beaten them 9 times in a row, 3 times in one year! Check the polls each year. Longview is always toward the top at the end of the year, and who has taken them down the past several years with, some would argue, inferior talent? Lufkin. Lufkin has only had one bad year in the playoffs when they lost to Garland. Last year, Lufkin pushed No. 1 Carroll to its limit in the state playoffs, 37-30. Lufkin defeated 5A/I champ Tyler Lee during the regular season. That's not living up to potential?

Ask that question of North Shore, also. They (arguably) have as much talent as Lufkin and are always ranked in the pre-season top 10. How many state championships have they won? VY was the QB of their "all-world" team when they lost to Austin Westlake, the team Lufkin B-slapped to win state with Reggie.

And as far as the steriods comment, IMHO, it is no more rediculous than the "Outlaw isn't that good of a coach" remark. How does SLC seem to make winning look so easy? You tell me. Is it the coach? Is it the presonal trainers? Steroids? Who knows? You tell me. One thing is for sure. It sure ain't superior athletes.

Outlaw's bio:

John Outlaw begins his tenth year at Lufkin High School following a seven year stay in Sherman, Texas. Coach Outlaw begins his 26th year as a Head Football Coach.

Outlaw’s overall record is: 221 wins - 72 losses - 5 ties, which includes 15 District Championships and 3 State Championships.

Outlaw’s coaching career began in 1976 serving as an assistant coach at his alma mater, The University of Central Arkansas, where he was an all AIC Defensive Back in 1975. After three years as an assistant, Outlaw became the Athletic Director and Head Football coach at Arkadelphia High in 1979. In his first season as Head Football Coach, Arkadelphia captured its initial State Championship. Outlaw’s 1987 Arkadelphia team finished in the Top 15 USA Today poll and #1 in the State of Arkansas. After seven years in Sherman, Outlaw became the winningest coach in that school’s history.

Recruits big enough for Rivals to worry about 2002-2006

Lufkin - 20
Longview - 20
Southlake Carroll - 21

Now, if you go count the kids who actually *went* to major D1 programs, then the picture changes dramatically.

Lufkin - 12
Longview - 10
Southlake Carroll - 6

I counted only D1 programs that have sniffed the top 25 or beaten top 25 teams in the past 5 years.

Take it for what you want. I am sure you'll somehow turn this into another insult to Lufkin.

Lufkin is one of the best programs if notthe best program in the state. They have talent but have great coaching. The players coming from there can play football. I think it is because of the area, that is what these kids are brought up doing. not worried about bball, they play football. My kind of guys.
