Recruiting seems to have taken a dip this year.

Allen and Murray are tough to evaluate at this point. The narrative here has obviously shifted to "oh they were a bunch of spoiled brats blah blah". If one kid transferred I might be able to believe that, but 2 kids transferring when they could start at QB at a program like a&m just doesn't happen unless there are serious internal issues. Time will tell, but I have to think they had legitimate reasons to want to transfer from what they saw internally.

Look, I always want kids like S. Nealy, J. Obioha, and M. Kennedy as part of the roster who contribute despite not being high end talent, but if you want to compete in the SEC much less contend for national titles, you have to have blue chippers on your roster over the long haul.

A lot of good our 4 and 5 stars did against Louisville. Comparing L'ville and us over the last 4 recruiting seasons ('12-'15), 5-stars: L'ville none, A&M 5, 4-stars: L'ville 8, A&M 42, 3-stars: L'ville 65 A&M 44, 2-stars: L'ville 12, A&M 5. We were outplayed by a predominantly 3-star team.

According to Rivals, Lamar Jackson who gave us fits was a high school 3-star. I believe the outcome of the game would have been the same with either Murray or Allen at QB; we would probably have won with Johnny.

1150 KNZE talked about it yesterday...

of Alabama's 22 starters...only 3 were not 4-stars or 5-stars.

the other 19 were all highly rated recruits.

ironically QB is one of the starters that was a 3-star

Hey, Sumlin had his best year with a bunch of 3 stars that were coached up by the previous regime. Find talent and develop.

Thing is, you have to have confidence that your hc can identify teachers, and get them on staff.

It amazes me that there are individuals who tend to keep up with college football who still insist that teams with 3 star players can consistently beat teams with 4 & 5 star players.

Unless the team is coached by Bill Snyder, it just doesn't happen, and even with Snyder, not often.

A team with all 3 star players coached by Sabin and his staff would not be successful in the SEC. Never!

Stars generically don't always tell the story.

Jimmy Clausen was a QB ND took in 2007. #2 Overall recruit in the 2007 class.

The problem for me was... He was born in September '87, which means he enters ND as a true freshman at 20 years of age. So, yeah, instead of having 2 years of college like most 20 year olds, he is coming out of HS.

For me, my birthday was Oct and I entered College at 17. In California (when I started), the deadline was Dec 1, instead of the Sept 1 for Texas. So, for a comparison to me, he was 3 years older than I was when I graduated HS, and we both started in California.

Having said that.

TCU does well with 3 Stars because they generally keep their better players longer. If you RS a freshman and keep him 5 years, there is an advantage.

A true freshman like Moore (LB) in his 1st year at LB, versus a Moore whose 1st season at LB is his 2nd year, would, IMO, likely show a much better experienced player.

I think a 3-Star who RSs can be every bit as good as a 4-Star right out of HS.

Bamma takes 4/5 Stars... and they don't start until their 3rd/4th year. They bring a young 4/5 Star off the bench to replace an experienced 4/5 star.

A Jr/Sr 3Star can be equivalent to a Fr/So 4/5 Star.
A HS 4/5 Star can reach to be a Jr/Sr NFL level player.

There are lots of exceptions. I was a 5'8"/150 Jr in HS (16), who graduated at 6'2"/185 (17) and finished my freshman year at 6'4"/215 (18). I was 6'4"/245 after my Sophomore year (19).

I went from a Jr in HS who was 16 5'8"/150 to a Jr in College who was 19 6'4"/245. As a Jr, I would have been 1 month younger than Clausen was when he entered ND, yet I had 3 years of College.

I was asked by my parents if I wanted to repeat 7th grade, so that I could be more aligned with my grade/age. I said no.

Patterson is doing okay with 3* players, because he primarily plays against teams with likewise 3* players.

you can win the Big 12 with 3-star players

Get back to us when a team full of 3 stars wins the NC. Heck, get back to us when a team full of 3 stars wins the SEC.

Some did some didnt. It depends on how the coaches utilize the talent. Getting the ball into the best players hands is the key. Dont believe it. Look at McCaffery. Or on defense, getting the right defensive call to utilize the skillset of the defenders.

The offense's woes have more to do with the absolutely abysmal playcalling, while sometimes a great QB for the right system just outperforms expectations. Johnny was a 3-star.

Doesn't excuse not overwhelming a less-talented team straight up, however. The players have a right to feel pantsed after their performance.
