Definitely something to pay attention to. I doubt that this will end up meaning much for the US other than fully entrenching it's status as endemic. Hopefully if immunity (both natural and vaccinated) with the new variant we'll be able to get a new booster shot in time. However, I still expect that everybody that's had either will have at least decent partial immunity. Countries like China and New Zealand will be interesting to watch if this virus continues to spread globally - the places shooting for COVID zero will likely fail to contain this.

Professor Francois Balloux has been pretty solid and in the middle when it comes to Covid as well as tracking new variants. He's mostly said variants have not mattered and they have fizzled out (after all, we are on Nu now).

I'm not smart enough to know what he's talking about, but I'd take what he says as likely right until proven otherwise. I would not do that with most of the "Covid Twitter experts".

If it has 32 spike protein mutations it is a big deal. The stock market knows it's a big deal as well. They shrugged off delta, but this one looks like a bigger issue

It has 50+ Mutations with 32 on the spike protein. High transmissibility low virulence? Maybe?

It has 50+ Mutations with 32 on the spike protein. High transmissibility low virulence? Maybe?


That is what I'm hoping. That's usually what happens with viruses but this thing is anything but usual

Mu had 21. It went away unnoticed.

Delta had 13. It was and has remained the big one.

Numerous named variants also unnoticed.

Not sure we can assume much of anything yet. We can't say it's a big deal until it's a big deal.

Put another way, myocarditis is reported in one to two in every 100,000 people who receive Pfizer.

There have also been a total of 150 reports of suspected Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) occurring after vaccination with AstraZeneca, a rare but sometimes serious immune disorder affecting the nerves.

Pfizer noted earlier that it's expecting a genetic breakdown of the "Nu" variant within 2 weeks.

Baum said the next few weeks of testing would be essential to determine whether Nu is more aggressive than delta. Lab tests could conclude BioNTech, Pfizer would have to reformulate their vaccine.

He noted one Hongkonger who was double Pfizer vaccinated experienced a breakthrough infection with Nu. The breakthrough cases are concerning as waning immunity from the COVID-19 vaccine continues as governments offer booster shots.

Baum spoke with Pfizer's CEO, Albert Bourla, who said it could take scientists 100 days to develop a novel variant vaccine to combat Nu.

Fully agree. Just laughing about the clarification of very vs extremely.

I'm not sure I'm convinced of that. I am convinced that the steps necessary to do so, if it is possible, appear to create worse problems than the disease itself. And in a wide-open society like the U.S., you're probably right that shutting it down is impossible. But some countries seem to have done a pretty effective job in controlling this respiratory virus, even if they haven't completely shut it down - see Japan, Singapore, Thailand, etc.
