A lot of infections < age 50 and the 2 largest increases in hospitilaztions (here in GA) are age 30-39 and under 18.

why?
* is the virus changing that much that previously spared individuals are now getting it?
* have our children's immune systems weakened so much over the 18 months of masks, isolation, that once strong immunity against covid is now much less effective
* with roughly 60% of the US vaccinated, is the virus more infectious and hammering unvaccinated, even younger population

what next?
* with virtually every demographic now impacted by covid cases...where can the virus go next
* will it continue to mutate to stay as infectious but less deadly
* with hundreds of millions of vaccinated + tens of millions of infections....is herd immunity close or is it a myth

Look at the demographics you are seeing next to demographics of who is vaccinated. The environment has changed more than the virus.

Yup. The most effected are the demo most likely to not have vaccinated b/c they think it only really effects the old. Well, the early variants were very dangerous to the older and the under 50 crowd was relatively safe. Now, most elderly are vaccinated and this strain is more infectious so it finds the unvaccinated. And those just happen to be the younger folks who figured they were fine without the vaccine. Most are still fine. But they are VERY likely to get the virus.

Most of the 65+ crowd is vaccinated so that takes away a huge pool of the most vulnerable in society. So it seems its hitting harder the folks <60 years old but its probably because the r0 for delta is estimated between 5 and 9 and the original strain was still high but only 2 to 3. Plus there are still large swaths of <60 yo adults who are unvaccinated and currently clogging up hospitals as a result.

last year the hospital was full of older people so the young got sent home to recover, now they have room so more are being admitted.

Over 80 percent of those over the age of 65 are fully vaccinated, and over 90 percent have their first dose, and it's climbing. The under 50 demographic is the lowest vaccinated nationwide. It's basic math.

Can confirm. Last year the 28 year old with oxygen in the mid 80% range would've been sent home. Now there's some room.

Florida, for example, has more covid hospitalizations than ever before. Don't think you've found the reason. Vaccination status is the single biggest indicator of whether you end up in the hospital now

That's my thought.

More younger folks because they aren't as likely to be vaccinated but still a high % of hospitalized un-vaccinated.

I think he's around my age which isn't young but his oxygen levels dropped, he did the smart thing and sounds like he got in front of the super scary complications because he knew to check his oxygen levels.

Because those demographics are unvaccinated at a greater rate then older people.

Funny this stat just came up from Piedmont Atlanta hospital:
96% of total patients are unvaccinated
97% of ICU patients are unvaccinated.

It's not about age, it's about opportunity for the virus.

I would think so. Couldn't this be why there is a higher hospitalization rate per case, but slightly lower IFR per hospital visit? Just thinking out loud. I might be wrong.

Actually, it's obesity.

With kids, a lot of them that are really sick are getting the Delta / RSV double whammy, which is putting them in the hospital.
