Good News in NY

Cuomo Presser - the 3 day average in hospital admits moved below the average from March 21st and he didn't present the data he's been presenting every day on new ICU admits, intubations, etc. Just 5 days ago the three day average hospital admit rate was 1,759 and yesterday it was 533.

The bad news is yesterday was the highest deaths to date but that's obviously a lagging indicator to admits.

He pushed the fact that shelter in place has worked. While the virus is horrible this is very good news that NY is headed down and it appears very rapidly.

Why would he not give new ICU admits since he has been previously?

Interesting that he's steered clear of the "Deaths by Race" stat so far, when other states are giving that info.

Are the "increased in hospitalized" just the number hospitalized that day or hospitalized minus discharged?

I hope the STI rates have flattened as well.

His hospitalized number are just admits. He had previously provided discharged and they had been surging but he didn't provide those numbers today.

He did have a slide on deaths by race and Blacks and Hispanic outpaced their percentage of the NY population while whites were less.

I suspect he didn't provide ICU admits and intubations because while the numbers are much better his overall tone was "we can't let up now."

Doesn't want to ruin the crisis mode and have to return the ventilators....or have people point out again that he didn't really need 40,000 ventilators.

How many did they actually end up using. Who got to pick the 26,000 people to die?

I know! Pandemics are easily predictable. He should have known weeks ago how many they would actually need

While his math never made sense to me I believe he doesn't want to have the public relax what they've been doing and have it flare up again. He was very focused on "what we've done has worked" in his presser today.

Or..... Cuomo (and all political leaders at all levels) need to keep their apocalyptic narrative intact so that the sheeple won't disregard current short-term distancing guidelines and cause an actual long-term apocalypse. Of course, some politicians have ulterior motives as well. No Forum 16.

This is one of those, "Better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them," cases.

While the deaths in NY yesterday were the most on record the admissions, ICU and intubations continued the downward trend in a very significant manner.

Shelter in place is working and NY will pull out of this in a matter of weeks. Compromised still need to shelter and we all need to socially distance and wear masks.

There has been some talk about ventilators possibly hurting, not helping patients. I'm sure that has spread throughout the medical community which has led to less of a dire need.

One doctor said that he is thinking symptoms are closer to altitude sickness and I am wondering if we will start hearing hospitals/states scream for hyperbaric chambers.

That's not at all the conclusion to be drawn from "we better be sure we have enough ventilators".

More like we had the ability to get enough without hysteria and mass panic. Our leaders need to be more cool headed on the front lines.

Great news: Less people in ICU in NY state yesterday than the day before, first time since this started.

Purple is what has happened because more people have complied with the stay at home orders than the models anticipated.

And yet all you heard about was people not complying, so really? Truth, it's in the eye of the beholder.

it is going to be interesting to see what happens in NYC when things start to open back up. It is literally impossible to continue social distance up there without just staying home.

Sorry to say, but they are toast. Anyone with the means to get out is gone. The housing market in NYC was already in a huge downturn with massive oversupply. It's going to be an absolute slaughter there.

What's funny is Cuomo said today you cannot look at their ICU numbers because all beds in his state are ICU beds so those numbers are wrong.

Just playing up the fear machine.

You watched today's briefing and thought he was playing up the fear machine? He was talking about steps to open things back up and seemed excited things had leveled off.

Exactly, I am not a fan of his but he is definitely wanting to open things back up.

He needs to provide more details on what goes into his numbers. For example, on his total hospitalized and "net change in hospitalized" is he including deaths in the net change number?

Well, if you ever wanted a condo in NYC but didn't want to afford one, sounds like a great opportunity.
