Appeal on a check swing

When the first base umpire moves closer to second base with a runner on first, how is he in any position to make a call on a check swing? I've always thought an appeal in this situation would always result in a palms-down call unless it was extremely obvious; in that case, the home plate ump would be making the call.

I've often wondered this also. My view of it is that when he is in place at second he has the same view of it as the home plate umpire, this just gives a second opinion on whether or not the batter went around.

When this is the case, maybe they should get a vote from the remaining umpire for the final say-so

But the home plate umpire is concentrating on calling balls and strikes.

The ump in the field does not have the angle in the field to make this call. That is the only reason you ask the ump opposite of the batter in a game with more then 2 blues. I see this all the time and most of the time sense the ump in the field is trying to 'get in the game'

If the ump near second sees the end of the bat then his angle is plenty good to make the call. Anyone got a video clip of the call in question?

this is one of the most missed calls (in my HUMBLE opinion) of any call in baseball....the umpire in the field really should flip a coin, bexcause chances are, he's looking at some skirt in the stands rather than paying attention to what he's suppose to be watching....

So, I see you have had some umpiring experience!

Watching this in replays of MLB games, it seems to me that the batter swings 95% of the time.

So if I were the ump I'd always just say "Yes, he swung."

jc, kinda apples and oranges....

in the bigs, you ALWAYS have an ump on the right field line to judge if he indeed 'go'....
in high school/college ball, that ump is behind second base......

plus, the pitching (talent) is just a LITTLE bit different....so, if you commit, it's not as easy to disguise....
