personally, I don't think San Antonio is the answer to their prayers.

There needs to be less teams in MLB, period. Miami and Tampa would be a good start.

Ive heard that if they leave Florida it will be for Las Vegas or Portland.

SA is Double A for a reason.

I think the talent has finally caught up with the number of teams. The only teams that are really crappy are so because of poor management of drafts and finances. Contraction isn't the answer, and I don't think San Antonio is. But... if basketball can do it, why not baseball?

Ultimately, I doubt they move to SA, but I do think the fishies will move along

BINGO! One of the few ideas Bud Selig had that I liked was contraction! There are simply too many teams based on the talent available. Plus, you have a half dozen or so cities that cannot or will not support MLB!

I agree chick. The problem with Bud's proposal for retraction was that he was trying to get rid of the Twins and their fans put up a big fight.

Now that the Nationals are out of Canada I think if you zapped the two florida teams the league would be in much better shape.

It would be nearly impossible to get the MLBPA to agree to contrat 2 teams. The owners would have to up the league min to about $1 MM or something else drastic in the players favor. Because it's not just the 2 MLB fanchises, but all their minor league teams as well.

I like the idea, but I think we'll get a college football playoff system before MLB contracts teams.

The players union isn't likely to be reasonable, but if they were, a reasonable solution could be had, such as expanding rosters by 2 men per team and bumping the minimums at all levels by 10% or something like that.

...wow, what makes you say that? I think they always listen and meet the league halfway... [/sarcasm]

Back to the point of the thread....

There is no way San Antonio can support a MLB team. Frankly, neither can Vegas. Both have tiny TV markets. Vegas doesn't have enough resident population density...neither does San Antonio.

I've seen some of the economic studies done for MLB. Charlotte, a city much wealthier than San Antonio, cannot support a MLB team either - though it has a better shot at it.

A third team in the NY/NJ market is more likely than San Antonio.

actually... what i said is that the talent HAS caught up. By that I mean that I think there is comprable talent to the number of teams. You're never gonna have 30 all-star teams, but teams are a lot more competitive than they once were.
