Are there any former Aggie baseball players who are currently in the major leagues? Most people know that Roger Clemons went to the University of Texas - who would be the most accomplished Aggie major leaguer?

chuck knobloch (sp?) would be the first that comes to mind, he has a world series ring i think.

actually, he went to the university of houston. His son may play at Texas, which maybe thats why you think there is the connection.

Chuck Knoblauch won a ring with Minnesota and at least two with the Yankees, and was an All Star second baseman for several years before he developed an inability to make a routine throw to first base. Davey Johnson played at A&M and I believe still holds the record for HR's by a second baseman in one season (46). He also led the Mets to a world series title as a manager and I think may have won a WS ring with the O's in the late 60's or early 70's.

Gollleeeee....where on God's green earth did you get that Clemens went to Cougar High. He is a dyed-in-the-wool teasip; he was a good pitcher there but was actually considered a #2 starter behind a guy named Calvin Schiraldi, who pitched for the Red Sox and achieved virtually nothing in MLB.

Thanks for the responses. Knobloch should have a couple rings with the Yankees. JJ - is that list from the current major league rosters?

Stu - that added info on Davey Johnson probably makes him the most renowned of those mentioned. And yes, he would have a ring from the Orioles in 1970. Edit: and also 1966.

That and Schiraldi is a nice guy, and Clemens is a d!ck.

Wally Moon, Beau Bell and David Johnson were probably our best major league players. After the Clemens at Cougar hi thread, I've become discouraged and downgraded the collective sports IQ appearing on this fine forum. Texas--the bunch in Austin, that is-- has produced a very large number of major league players. Who knows who Bibb Falk was?

Have you ever met Clemens? As someone who was visited in the Hospital by Mr. Clemens while undergoing cancer treatments, I assure you he is not what you say he is. Anyone who volunteers his time to brighten the days of kids like me on a regular basis is at the least a pretty decent human being.

Schiraldi was 32-39, 4.28 ERA in his 8 year career. That would be worth about $5MM per these days.

I have been out with Clemens, Knoblauch, Jeter, and couple others during Spring Training. Those three went out together almost every night.

If he does not know you, Clemens is a dick. Since I was friends with his friends, I did not get treated bad though

Go to espn.com

Click on MLB, then players, then click the "search by" drop down and select college. Then select Texas A&M. Knoblauch hasnt played for 2 or 3 years now, so its not current. I'm guessing its just everyone who is in ESPN's player database.

List of tu players (89 players)

http://www.baseball-reference.com/schools/texas.shtml

A&M (45 players)

http://www.baseball-reference.com/schools/texasam.shtml

Houston (20 players)

http://www.baseball-reference.com/schools/houston.shtml

Rice (surprisingly just 17 players but some darned good ones):

A quick glance over

http://www.baseball-reference.com/schools/

seems to indicate that Texas has produced more Major Leaguers than any other school. The very surprising runner-up (at least to me): Holy Cross!

Definitely not cool, I can say without a doubt that most athletes, especially pro, are *******s, no matter what school they went to. And this includes Texas A&M.

We here most of the time glamorize them or make them seem heroic because we see them on tv or doing P.R. that was scheduled by the team or an agent, when in reality they are still the dumbass meathead that they were in high school.

I liked Knoblauch when he played with the twins, but did he not have some problems throwing the ball at the end of his run with the yankees?? Just wondering, a great guy I got to meet at a Rangers game.

I won't bash Clemens or anyone else for what school they went to, and certainly they all have their good days and bad days, good traits and faults, same as anyone else. Clemens is a heck of a competitor, the kind of guy you love when he is on your team and may not care for when he isn't.

One comment I remember one of his (former) major league teammates said many years ago, and I forget who it was, was something to the effect of, "they call him Rocket man, not rocket scientist." Which he can just ignore while looking at his boatload of Cy Young awards and trying to decide which team cap to have on his bust in Cooperstown.

Did Davey Johnson actually play for A&M? I always thought he attended just his first semester. Then went pro before the baseball season.

According to my 2004 yearbook, Johnson lettered in '62 (and only 62). The Ags went 18-7 that season.

Then of course he won World Series in 1966 and 1970.

i'm with rocks. i've had the "pleasure" of being around clemens in ny a few times as well as all star galas, etc. you could see by how he treated people that he isn't the kindest person in the world, but truthfully, i can't really blame him. i'm i'd be the same way in a similar situation.
