True, but then again anything and I mean anything can happen in baseball, look at last year when the Mt. Everest's of firsts happened when the Sox came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the best of 7 series. So anything can happen and baseball is also a game of hot and cold streaks...

That ARod play brings up a question I have never been able to answer. The rulebook provides that ARod's play was a violation and resulted in a properly called out. What I don't understand is why it's OK to steamroll a catcher to avoid getting out, plant a SS or 2Bman to break up a double play, but you can't touch the guy at first?

They all seem to have the same motivation--cause physical contact with a fielder in hopes of preventing an out, but one is illegal and the others are legal. Anyone have any insight into this issue?

Seems like a pretty strong statement considering they're only 1 game behind your team. What's that say about your team?

[EDIT] Now that I think about it I suppose you've been waiting since Boston moved ahead to post this and you couldn't wait any longer. One game is nothing.

I'm not a Boston fan but I couldn't help but respond to a pretty dumb post.

I think it comes down to defense: the catcher has a mask, chest and leg protectors...gotta use 'em.

Correct me if I'm mistaken but it may also be that if the defensive player is standing in the basepath you have the right to run him over. Arroyo wasn't in the basepath when arod swatted at the glove.

Ivy, I think you're right. If he's in your path of running there isn't an issue, but knocking the ball out of his glove when he's not on the basepath would sort of be like running out of the basebath to elude the tag. At least that's my hypothesis.

I looked to see what MLB said in their rulebooks. I couldn't find anything that directly said anything about it except for something in Section 7.06 (granted I got bored and distracted while reading this)

quote:
The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.

A very interesting rule, indeed. It is interesting in the fact that it makes no mention of the legality of the runner taking the catcher out when he is rightfully in the basepath with the ball, a la the Pete Rose-Ray Fosse All-Star Game incident. I assume that the umpire's judgement must come into play there somewhere.

No mention of other infielders is made either (If I read everything correctly).

Sh^tty play by the Sox tonight. Couldn't drive in anything. I don't know how many total men we left on base, but it was a lot. Add in the two runners thrown out at home and another pitiful showing by Embree and you get an undeserved Yankees win.

As a Rangers fan I don't have a dog in this hunt, but, as the tying run in the top of the 9th, why did Mueller have his bat sitting on his shoulder with 2 strikes and 2 outs?

The way his stance is, he has the bat on his shoulder and then lifts up and starts to swing through...the pitch should have been called a ball, so he didn't swing.

maybe someone already stated it, but E-Rod was called out because he swatted at the ball. Nothing wrong with running a player over or taking them out while they are in the base path, but you can never swat at the ball.
