Last year the Ags mashed an incredible 136 home runs in 68 games, a new single season record, blowing past the previous high 128 set by the 1999 club in 70 games.
And while the first pitch of 2025 has yet to be thrown, if the 2025 edition of the Fightin' Texas Aggies live up to their pre-season billing, I think it's safe to say the just established season home run record is very much in danger.
Frankly, on paper this team looks to be one of the nastiest lineups 1-9 A&M has ever fielded, quite capable of hitting 150+ by the end of the year. The Aggies return 56% of their home run production from a year ago, which saw three players hit over 20 for the first time in program history. The Aggies have only 7 single seasons with a player hitting 20 or more, and 4 of those have occurred under Earley in 2023 (Jace) and 2024 (Jace, BMont, Gavin). Sorrel and Schott also return and both should safely reach double digits. By all accounts Binderup has been destroying the ball all spring, and the coaches are expecting big things from the big man. The Aggies picked up several mashers in the portal as well. Both Kash and Henseler have already recorded 20+ home run seasons and Bergevin is right behind them with 18 last year, albeit in the MAC.
On the individual side, Jace has a real shot at two different home run records this year. Daylon Holt -- who will always hold a special place in my heart -- is your current career leader with 56 HR. Jace is currently sitting at 50 and may hit his mark before the end of the month. Daylon is also your single season record holder at 34. Jace has the #2 spot on the list with his 29 last year. Jace is also the only Ag in program history to hit 20 or more home runs in back to back seasons. He'll look to be the first to 3-peat the 20+ feat in 2025 and cement his place as the best home run slugger in Texas Aggie history.
True freshman Gavin put together a remarkable season of his own at the plate last year. His home run total of 23 is good enough for #6 on the all time single season list, and just did eclipse the newly established record of 21 set by Jace in 2023. I think Gavin's freshman campaign was a bit overshadowed by the monster seasons from Jace and Bmont but this kid can really mash.
I am beyond excited for the 2025 edition of Fightin' Texas Baseball. I think this team will go as the pitching goes, because I'm quite confident these kids are going to hit the ball very well.
As for predictions, I say 150+ on the year.
