My dad and I were going through some old pictures of my grandpa today and I figured some of you old timers might enjoy these pics and a quick story on his life.
He grew up in Kurten, TX and attended Texas A&M until he dropped out in 1942 to join the US Army Air Corps. He went overseas and flew second seat on B17s in over 30 missions in Europe. Him and his crew were shot down somewhere over Belgium behind the German lines. My grandfather got separated from his crew and ended up having local farmers hide him from the Germans and get him back west to the Allies. Unfortunately his pilot did not make it but the rest of the crew survived to fly more missions.
After he returned from the war he re-enrolled at Texas A&M and played for the 1946 Texas Aggies baseball team. After he graduated he ran a dairy farm in Ecleto, TX until he sold the farm to teach high school chemistry in Karnes City, TX. After he retired, he starting building and playing fiddles. He was a die hard Aggie and had every football game recorded on VHS from the 1980s up to his death in 2006.
I've attached a pic of him with his flight crew in Europe and him with his baseball squad at Texas A&M. In the baseball pic he's 2nd row, 5th from the left and in the flight crew pic he's 1st row, 2nd from left. Great man.
