I know zero about baseball. What is "our approach" to hitting?

I've heard on the radio our new coach has changed our approach to hitting so we are scoring more runs.

Don't you just go up there and try to hit it if you can? I don't see how it could be more complicated than that?

Hit the ball hard and far

Being more patient at the plate is the most noticeable to me. Notice how many pitches the opposing pitchers typically toss?

Relentless in fouling off good pitches when down two strikes and as such often eventually earning a walk or getting a good pitch to drive.

Hit 'em where they ain't.

List of possible factors when hitting; off the top of my noggin.
1. Who's on base? How many outs? Whats the score? What inning is it? Is the fielding team shifted in any way?
2. Left or right-handed pitcher? Off-speed guy, burner or noticeable pitching tendencies? Does the pitcher 'miss' frequently in a spot that the batter really likes to hit? (some guys thrive on inside pitching, some guys can't get their hands through the zone fast enough. Does the pitcher throw a A+ slider, but a C- fastball? The batter might wait for the fastball even if the slider is in the meat of the zone.
3. Is any fielder noticeably deficient in a specific way? (scouting can play a big part)
4. Is a sac fly or bunt needed?
5. Might be trying to run up the pitch count for various reasons.

Making solid contact is often not the main objective.

Not only that we walk a LOT more.

The Ole Miss announcers referred to it as a grinding approach during our last at bat. Reminds me of Ron Washington's model emphasizing productive at bats including pushing the at bat to eight pitches.

Schloss has always taught a simple, but hard to do, philosophy. Swing at strikes. Take balls.

What is so impressive about our guys is their grit in their at bats. They Foul off a lot of borderline pitches to get a better one. They are a nightmare for pitchers pitch counts.

Schloss was (and I assume still is) very big on mental approach. Don't let them rush you, take your time, don't get in a hurry, wear down the pitch count.

I don't know if he's brought the Brian Cain stuff in yet, but that's why TCU players always looked at their bat to "refocus" after every pitch.

He preaches hitting your pitch early in the count. If you get behind, sit on the fastball and adjust to the off speed.

The biggest difference is having the same mental approach and controlling what you can control.

The absolute best of the best of the best in the world get a hit 1/3 of the time, so yeah it's complicated. If you want to understand why it's so difficult I highly recommend a few minutes scrolling through Pitching Ninja's timeline.

Here's just one of 2 billion examples. These 2 pitches look the same for 30 of the 60 feet and then finish 3 feet apart:

Focus is the key. Prior to that do your homework on the pitchers. Know their patterns. Know the most likely pitch based on the balls and strikes. Focus on the ball from the top of the pitch.

This. And, we are brutal on anything that isn't above average pitching. Ergo, as we run up pitch counts we get deeper into pitching lineups and the quality of the pitching tends to decline the deeper we go. The deeper we go the more we abuse opposing pitchers.

It was said on the Saturday SEC+ that we only swing at 38% of the pitches
we see....the lowest % in the SEC. So we are more selective than most teams to get our pitch!

It really has been fun to see our approach at the plate this year. Gone are the days of going up with no discipline or approach at all. It was maddening to watch us under RC swe guys go up hacking at the first 2 pitches that were marginal at best and then go down looking at a fastball grooved for strike 3 or to see us watch a couple fastballs for the first 2 strikes and then swing wildly at the next pitch which always seemed to be a breaking ball way outside the zone meant to draw a chase.

Go look at the OPS numbers of guys who played here last season and expect for Britt they've all improved dramatically.

Seeing guys attack the fastball early in the count, not chase that first pitch breaking ball, and then grind out ABs to see a lot of pitches and get a better chance of the pitcher making a mistake has been a revelation.

I'm not sure where to find it but I'd love to see the stats for our #'s of "quality ABs" this year vs. the past few years.

When I was growing up Gougler's approach was what we used because we didn't get a ton of instruction beyond that. From watching, if you're going to work counts and get the most hittable pitch you also have to be able to protect the plate and foul off pitches on the corners or just off the plate with two strikes. That is what makes us effective. In contrast, under Bolt, we swung for the fence on the low and away curve ball just off the plate and struck out. Doing the latter was infuriating because we would take two pitches down the middle and then strike out on a pitch they couldn't do anything with.

Impressed with their discipline to recognize balls out of the strike zone with two strikes on them.

And the answer to the question: "Swing at strikes, take balls, swing as the game suggests, hit it where it's pitched."
