Tech had 9 pitchers each pitch one inning against Howard Payne.

Usually a starting pitcher has to go five innings to record a win.

In a case like that, where a team uses multiple pitchers (one per inning may be excessive) the winning pitcher is up to the discretion of the official scorekeeper. I would guess that the techsters must have put up some runs in the first and never trailed after, so the scorekeeper gave the win to the first pitcher.

Do you have the inning by inning score of the game, if every pitcher threw one inning, that would be the telling factor.

Here I got it myself

quote:

Howard Payne........ 005 000 000 - 5 6 2
Texas Tech.......... 552 400 01X - 17 24 2

Tech got up by 5 in the first and never looked back, so it really was the scorekeepers discretion. Since the pitcher who started the game was the only tech pitcher to throw when the game was even tied, I tend to agree with his decision.

My question is why did they play 9? Shouldn't this have been called after 7 innings?
Fun baseball stat, Statman.

Is it true that in non-conference games the Head Coaches get to decide the # of innings required for a pitcher to get a W?

If the official scorer is told before the game that the starter is only going to pitch x innings to get some work, the starter will get the win if he comes out with a lead and assuming his team never gives up that lead even if he doesn't go five innings. For example, on Tuesday Austin Creps got the W against Sam Houston even though he only pitched three innings.

I think it is a good NCAA rule as long as it is not abused to pad a pitcher's win total.

I think Dave mentioned that Creps got the win because he was a "predetermined starter".

Sounds like something Dave would say.

Aren't all starters "predetermined?"

"predetermined # of innings"

Dave was right!

and nothing, just thought it was interesting. It obviously was predetermined that each pitcher would pitch one inning. The pitcher who gave up five runs in his inning didn't get pulled.
