Wasn't he doing just as good as Childress? Or as bad?

So when did you start paying attention to Aggie baseball?

Childress deserves the same treatment the fat ego maniac gave MJ after his last Texas series.

If this wasn't Childress' Sherman moment, I don't know what else is? If you are anxiously waiting for Childress to became a top notch head coach, you are going to waiting or a long, long time.

This is the key point to take away. He's a solid coach, but not an excellent coach. If excellence matters, then there has to be a change. If just being good, but not great matters, then a change is needed.

The team has terrible fundamentals and Childress seems to be an average recruiter at best given the facilities, support, and the warm weather climate. I'm really not a potbanger but can someone explain to me what upside you see from Childress?

Mark Johnson could still be our head coach today had he never run off Bill Hickey. We have not hit well since Hickey was here. I think Johnson's gripe on Hickey was that he wouldn't recruit but he sure coached the hell outta some hitting.

Look. Just saying Childress because he makes 8 regionals in a row and sneaks in every year should not be enough. When we signed Childress, his contract was for 2-3 times the pay package as MJ, so one would think for the pay, we should get substantially better results. The only way to get substantially better results would be to consistently make it to Omaha (once every 3 years or better on average and/or win a national championship. Those should have been our expectations and they have clearly not been achieved.

A quality Coach would have had his team playing flawless lights out ball given the stakes yesterday.

We were very sloppy and tu handed our ass back to us.

Losing SEC record this year. If the AD likes this Coach, then maybe the AD needs an attitude adjustment.

Because he chose to play small ball against LSU in 1989 with the best lineup in Aggie history.

The same reason RC was fired. He couldn't compete in big games. In Mark's case it was regionals and CWS appearances. Fran didn't work out. Got rid of him. Sherm didn't work out. Got rid of him. Now we have our guy. It may have to be the same thing in baseball and basketball.

Why is there always a group that pops up wanting to revert back rather than progress forward? The "we should of never got rid ofs". They have ridiculous logic.

Not pulling the pitchers fast enough.

Um no, the complaint for years is that he did not bunt guys over against LSU believing his high powered offense would eventually come through.
Amazing Moves

No. He attempted to bunt late in the game instead of using his high powered lineup.

I was there in '89 against LSU. He wasn't playing "small ball" his team ran in to a buzz saw against 3 future mlb pitchers, period. Hard to swallow, but that was no choke job.

That's a fact. I was there also.

Ben McDonald had an amazing arm.

The Aggies' best chance to win the second game in the eighth with no outs, a runner on second base and all-conference catcher Eric Albright at the plate.
"I had an option to bunt him over to third and force them to bring the infield in, but they probably would have walked the next hitter and set up the double play," Johnson said. "Anyway I chose to [let Albright hit], because he could go the other way well and that was what Leskanic was doing, putting the ball over the plate with hard sliders and fast balls. But it didn't work, and I've told myself the rest of my life I should have bunted."

Certainly does not sound like small ball to me.

I guess I remembered it wrong. My bad. I was in the 8th grade. He still underperformed in the postseason. Really underperformed.

That 1st remark as pointed out below was a bit harsh.

And I was also among those in the stands, as I was for most of the games at Olsen that season. MJ rarely sacrificed that season and gave the reason that it was a waste of outs with that high powered offense.

Yep. I get it. I don't know why I remembered it that way. I have been pissed about that for quite some time.

I wasn't a fan of MJ, but arguing for small ball with a team that averaged 11 runs a game with a pedestrian pitching staff seemed like the wrong move at the time. Can't fault MJ on that one.

I don't think I'm a troll for saying how I feel. He was a great conference coach who sucked in the post season. I followed him pretty close. I just got one scenario wrong.

The answer to the OPs question is simple.

Because we had sub-500 seasons and flat out missed the regionals several years.

If the question is somehow intended to link or compare to our current situation; it is a highly ignorant attempt.

You can want the current staff gone with the fury of a 1000 suns and still not be so dumb to see we are *still* in a better position than when MJ left. Invoking that era leaves you no point at all.

MJ averaged 41 wins a season during his tenure. The draft ate his classes up pretty badly there late. It was his job to adjust to that misfortune and he didn't. Still a great man and great baseball coach. We fired him to elevate the program. Sadly, it didn't really happen. We are no better off now than in MJ's last years when you look at the entirety of the situation.

I think the frustration is focused most directly at the fact that 9 years in we haven't taken a really significant step forward as a program following MJ's firing.

When you fire a legend - his jersey is on the wall of BBP, for crying out loud - then it ought to be to get the program not only headed in the right direction, but on solid footing at the next level.

That means recruiting better talent and coaching them up once they get here. The very valid concern at this point is whether this staff has the ability to do this at the level we expect for Aggie baseball. We have the history, we have the facilities, we have the talent pool. 9 years is enough to get the program there, and squeaking into a regional every year isn't "there" for most Ags.

Simply making a regional at TAMU is going to happen the majority of the time, regardless of who the coach is. We will get good players because of who we are, again regardless of coach. A real coach will have us in the hosting conversation on a routine basis.

Don't worry. We have a savior coming named Kyler Baseball. He will teach hitting and fundamentals to the rest of his teammates, hit .400, steal bases and ignore stupid base running signals.

Look, I'm not happy with where we are. Johnson, over the course of his tenure, was successful in my opinion. Childress has been asked to take the program to a higher level. Childress has essentially done what Johnson did during his tenure. What Johnson was doing at the end of his tenure was not up to par compared to Childress nor the prior years of Johnsons career - which is precisely why he was let go.
