Definately overrated. If he played for the Tigers no one would ever talk about him. I mean the guy has a mental edge but in terms of major league shortstops there are others I would rather have: AROD, Nomar, Tejada, and you could make a case for Omar and Edgar Renteria. But he is a perfect fit in New York.

Based strictly on stats, the other AL shortstops are better. Based on being a leader, winner and team player...Jeter is one of the best in MLB. He'll never hit as many homers as the others or have as high of an average at the plate, but the guy makes so many clutch plays to win big games, you can't vote against him. I say let Nomar have all of the all-star game MVPs he wants and Tejada can be the AL MVP every single year. Jeter has a ton of World Series trophies...I'm sure he likes that trade.

I have to agree that Jeter is without a doubt one of the great shortstops in the game, now and all time. The guy comes through when you need him to. Not only that, but too many people are so hung up on offensive numbers, you forget that traditionally your middle field guys are your defensive strong points (catcher, pitcher, short, second, and center field). It's great if these guys put up great numbers, and in today's game it's much more common, but it's their defense that makes these players so valuable. I'll take Jeter's mobility and range any day.

Some qualities cannot be measured by statistics. Derek Jeter is one of the main reasons the NY Yankees have been the dominant team in MLB in recent years. He is an outstanding team player and leader whose love of the game is contagious. If anything, he's underrated.

Jeter is overrated, and he can burn.
Bernie Williams is the heart and soul of that team.

AggieMBP: You hit the nail on the head..I've been saying that Bernie is the true leader of the team, and steps up moreso than Jeter. MLB is so SS heavy, I think that he may rate about 4th or 5th overall. No way that Jeter does as well as ARod in Texas without that lineup supporting him.

If Jeter played for Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa, Florida, etc., nobody would care who he is. He's been protected in the lineup by good hitters around him and his numbers inflate because of that. He's in a hitter's park. He's AVERAGE DEFENSIVELY. Very little power.

The guy is a good player, but there are tons of players that are as good or better and don't get the pub because they don't play in NY.

When the dust settles and his career is in the history books, he won't stack up as a HOFer. The only thing going for him is the rings that were bought by Steinbrenner. It's easy to have the heart of a champion when your Daddy has the pocketbooks of George Steinbrenner.

The Yankees may have heart, but that team has NO SOUL.

You don't get to play for the New York Yankees for too long if you are overrated.

The key to the Yankees success the past 6-7 years has been starting pitching, clutch hitting, and M.Rivera.

Scott Brosius was just as valuable as Jeter was in the post season.

Agree that Jeter is overrated. The media has made him out to be more than he is because he plays in NY and because he endears himself to the female population, something MLB and the press will try to make more $$ off of.

To justify my point, the Yanks have the best record in baseball WITHOUT the services of Jeter on board, as he was injured in the first game of the season. The Yanks have great starting pitching & defense (with or without DJ), clutch hitting and a dominant closer, along with a GROUP..repeat...GROUP of players who play as a team. To borrow Al Davis' term, "Just Win, Baby" would apply to the Yankees more than any other professional sports team.

Man, as much as I hate for them to win, ala the Lakers, I have to admire their team attitude.

That team attitude, more than any individual is what is separating Champions from wanna-be champions in this era.

Maybe our Ag's can pick up on this this weekend. I have seen some similarities this year.

AROD does everything that Jeter does only 10 times better. He is a better hitter, better fielder, as good of a runner, and more professional. While I will acknowledge that Jeter does possess an intangible that not many others have ever possessed, I believe that if you stuck AROD or Tejada or Nomar in that lineup the Yankees would be better off. I believe all of those guys are as good as Jeter defensively and are much better hitters. But clearly AROD has no peers.

More professional? Nothing against A-Rod, but what's your basis for comparison on who is more professional than whom? I think both are pretty good guys, good role models, etc.

Even the Yankees can't afford AROD.

Jeter doesn't win titles for new york, george's PAYROLL wins titles for new york......and that is why I can never cheer on the hated yankees, because it isn't "let's build a team", it's let's buy another title......

Jeter replied to a question from a grade schooler about why he didn't take the higher offer and leave NY when he was a free agent. He replied that he had enough money and had always wanted to be and wanted to stay a Yankee.
This is an almost extinct character trait.
