From BaylorFans.com:

quote:
Their fans aren't nearly as creative as they used to be, and they seem more thin skinned as well (I guess that's what one year of Sherman has done for them versus the dominance of Slocum).

apparently, we arent doing enough.. This needs to be fixed!

I will completely agree w/ the first half of that statement. Our fans aren't as creative as they used to be, mob mentality is the norm. In/Out box and counting practice swings (1, 2, 3 wiggle wiggle) is way too common.

The biggest difference I remember from not that long ago and my younger years at Olsen is that the fans would pick something to rag individual players on, see what worked or got laughs, and go with it from there with everyone pitching in.

I'd be willing to try, but I'm an old guy on the old guy side now. I'd be like the old guy at a rock concert if I tried to constantly sit on the front row of 206.

Now there's maybe one guy who tries to do that. Sounds like Will and K-Man did a good job.

Here's my view of the whole ragging situation...

First off, i don't really see the whole in and out of the box thing being a problem (it is generally done away with fairly quickly).

I do, however, see that sometimes creativity, or doing things "differently" is not meet very well. It's almost as if something wasn't done last year, than there is no way that it can be done this year.

The sad thing is that the list of "appropriate" things to do has shrunk throughout the years.

In and out of the box was just fine when it was creative and not overused, there is no reason for it to be banished from olsen (if done the right way).

6-4-3 is totally gone... except for a few brave souls in 205...

Apparently standing and clapping with two strikes and two outs is no longer appropriate because it "never works".

The raggies used to thrive on little to no rules, but the current state of ragging is way too rule oriented...

Not saying i won't continue to attend any games that work will allow and rag my butt off, but this is just what i've seen change over the years.

My problem with this is that mostly Canadians do it when there are two outs (with zero or one strike(s)) and it seems overdone.

I don't like anything that is way overdone because then it not longer is special/funny/unique act.

if you don't like something, no need to get all your dumb buddies in on hounding an Aggie fan for thinking outside the box; just try to do one better

be creative rather than destructive

umm...no

clapping on 2 strikes and 2 outs was traditionally done in a hard/important inning...

doing it in the 1st when the 3rd batter is up is the epitome of "overusing something"

Well this may help or not but back in 1999 and 2000 my friends printed bios and took them to the game. Our Rule: "If its on the Web and we could print it, it ain't private." What ever was on that sheet we used creatively. Did we cross the line at times you bet,but I tell you what it made Olsen Field that much exciting to go to and be a part of. However in this age right now, you guys could not bring yourself to do that again. I could tell that when I sat with 203 vs Fulerton.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying you guys can't come up with new stuff but I admit it is getting kind of redundant.

Try the bios again see if you works.

I sit in 203 and print up bios and rosters for every team. I do my research. I didn't get to for CSF because I have a late class and only got to stay for a few innings. We try and keep it creative, but it's tough sometimes.

The one time I get on to fans is when they cross the line with profanity or sexual comments. It's a family game. Other than that, I think it's hilarious. We'll have to start thinking of some stuff that's more creative. I have a few ideas.

Lance - it's not just me and Will. There are a bunch of us in 103 & 104 that sometimes pick up on something about a player and run with it (we are in fact WAYYYYY more subdued than we used to be). We don't usually stay on one player anymore unless the player does something to make him stand out - like Joey did.

There was a Baylor lady Saturday night (sitting close to Clendenin's seats) that went crazy on BU's home run - it sounded just like the witch from Wizard of Oz. Well, most of the heckles from 103 / 104 from that point had some sort of Oz slant! It was pretty entertaining.

What I'm trying to say here is that - As you get too old for the upper deck, we invite you to join us in 103 / 104 to make the transition a little smoother! We can leave the heckling of the players directly to this younger group of new fans.

As far as the reference in the OP, I would never concern myself with what a Baylor fan thought of heckling, you do have to consider the source. Humor, thick skin and Baylor fan have NEVER gone together.

I printed bios from '05 to '07

By '07 bios online started containing very little info...

In '08 the only thing you could find was an embilished "past"... For example, saying somebody had the highest batting average on their HS team when they only had a dozen at bats...

For those of you looking for heckling material, I suggest using http://pipl.com/. It searches myspace, facebook, blogs, and all that good stuff. It's amazing what some people leave public.

For example, for one of the softball games, I happened to find the Utah's pitcher's blog. She came in the game in the 6th with the score 6-0, no outs, no one on. Knowing someone's favorite restaurant, movie, tv show, and her 5th grade nickname can really mess with a person. I shouted her 5th grade nickname as she wound up, and she completely lost the handle on the pitch, hit our batter, and cast some angry glares my way. She ended up allowing the last two runs to score, invoking the run rule, and not retiring a single batter.

Seabass and TexasRebel thanks for trying and keep the good work. The guys that I sat with back then we did not use profanity. We knew that much but we kinda rubbed up against the sexual comments when the "situation" presented itself. I admit there were some games that we should of got kicked out of Olsen but it never happen.

BTW, what was that fat guy from Baylor infront of your section (203) talking about on Sunday? Hell the guy look like hamburger wrapped up McDonalds wrapper from where I was sitting.

I second doing internet research. Don't stop at the bio's either.

You can often look up archived line scores from the school's athletic web site. If you're really motivated you can do a google search and dig up their line scores from high school. Imagine being on the mound and suddenly being reminded of the time you gave up 10 runs in 2+ to po-dunk high.

You can also use google to see if you can find any long forgotton news stories.

The bio's still give family information (relatives, etc). Enter Whitepages.com. I'm sure that you can figure out what to do with that.

Searching Blogs, myspace, facebook, etc. is a great idea. Too bad those weren't all that popular when I was a student.

Wow Wadd - that goes back a ways, but I sure do. I remember every time something good happened the players would give something like the hang loose sign and shout something close to "Uhta choooe" - I know I'm really butchering this. They were also REALLY fascinated with the trains that went by.

When did you guys quit being upper deck front row regulars? My friend and I spent our free time at Olsen from age 9 through college, and I remember a lot of those guys. I've also been in Clendenin's seats a few times (friend of a friend), so I was probably pretty close by.

When we were kids, we thought that guy Jimmy was hilarious. (That may speak to who his humor appealed to). Whatever happened to him?

Never underestimate the stupidity of people on facebook. Type a name.... offer friendship... wait a day or two... click/browse, copy, and print. YWIA.

Also, on the note of originality at Olsen. Original material is a precious commodity, livens up the atmosphere, and in my opinion is paramount, but beware, if you say something dumb you deserve to hear about it. Applause for good, EEEEE for bad, and you get ragged for terrible/vulgar. Elitist be damned, I call it quality control.

original will be repeated and become old

DISCLAIMER TO MY PREVIOUS COMMENT

My system is flawed and easily corrupted by the following:

Those "regulating quality control" MUST be able to differentiate between what is actually funny and original and what is pure garbage... this singular idea (i.e. self-appointed "Aggie Baseball gods" ) dooms all Raggies from progressing as a society.

The communists had the same problem.

firing it up on a 3-2 cout with 2 outs should only be done in the 9th. It gets annoying when you fire it up every inning. It isn't baseball savvy. Fire it up in the 9th and that's it. 203 gets it, why can't Canada (and sometimes mexico). Also, on a note with the ragging....if we were allowed to use a lil more innuendos it would be more original...i use them all the time, but half the time i get scolded for "family game"....that's why most people just leave the innuendos and that;s what she saids to me. but please, stop firing it up in the first inning 3-2 count 2 outs...it makes pitchers jumpy (experience on that one...unless its the 9th, pitchers dont want it fired up, it makes us nervous...thats why we say it doesnt work)

yes aggiematt - "that's what she said" is soooooo funny and original. My 9th graders really like those lines. I understand why you feel like your material is limited when you can't use awesome material like that!
