Tough loss tonight against the Hawks. To quote my man Rasheed, both sides played hard. Discuss.

Spurs lost to the Hawks???? Wow thats terrible . . . How again are they better than the Mavs this season? They have one more win, but have they even played a schedule near as tough as the Mavs have? They split with the Mavs, but they won only by two and Howard was out for that game. The first meeting when both Howard and Ginobli where in, and the Mavs dominated them by 19. Mavs certainly have the more impressive win of the two's schedule, with a 26 point rout of the NBA's number 1 team right now, the Detroit Pistons. Looking at all the facts, you have to conclude that the Mavs are the better team right now . . .

I don't know how any facts would lead one to believe the Mavs are better. But I think all this back and forth is retarded anyway at this point in the year. It's an 82 game season. And I don't see how a fan of ANY team in the league has any room to talk smack about the Spurs, the defending champs.

Facts arent DevP's forte.

As I and many other Spurs fans have said now and before the season: the Spurs may play especially terrible in the second game of a back to back.

Luckily, the playoffs dont have any back to back games.

do any other mavs/rockets fans love how the spurs allways come up with excuses for each of their losses?

Oh, and guitar, so you think that the spurs are a better team than the Mavs right now in this season? Please, I just want to hear you say it . . . .

Of course, the Spurs do tend to start the season slow, and if starting the season at 15-4 (or whatever the record is exactly) is slow for this year....

I think the Spurs will be fine, and if someone is better than they are, it probably isn't the Mavs.

EDIT: fortunately for you, you feel no reason to explain why the Mavs have more losses than the Spurs, so just keep right on truckin' with the anti-Spurs/Duncan rhetoric, it is fun to read.

Not the mavs, maroonout06? how do you come to that conclusion based on the facts and the play of the two teams against their respecive competition?

Or even better, how the Spurs played in their two games verses the Mavs?? The mavs definately played considerably better over the two games against the spurs . . .

The Spurs are the best team in the NBA, which is one reason they have more wins than anyone else.

The annual Mav fan delusions have started way too early this year. Must be avian flu or something.

Smack aside, I believe the Mavs are much improved this year, but when Pop gets the chemistry right on the "new Spurs"; they will be awesome, as they usually are, after the All-Star break.

Team (conference place) record

San Antonio (1) 16-4
Dallas (4) 14-5

Head to head: 1-1

Why don't you tell me why you think Dallas is better than San Antonio, because that is what needs to be proved here; there is no reason to try to prove that San Antonio is better than Dallas.

The best team in the league at any point in time is the one at the top of this list. The only thing that matters as far as the regular season goes is who is on top after 82. End of story.

Best team in the NBA? That was last year. They have played more games than most teams in the NBA, i will give you that.

And yes the mavs have one more loss, but they have also played stiffer competition thus far with their opponents having a better win-loss percentage than the opponents of the Spurs . . .

Interesting this loss by the Spurs follows a big win by the Mavs in Memphis over a very strong Memphis team. A win where two of the Mavs best players were out due to injury (Howard and Terry). Yet the Spurs had everybody ready and healthy for their bout with the 3 and 16 Hawks.

oh, and the mavs have not lost to a team even nearas bad as the, as ESPN puts it, "lowly Hawks."

Spurs losses:
@Mavs - second night of a back to back.

@Washington - second night of a road back to back

Chicago - Spurs clank their FTs and give up the paint to da Bulls. Spurs played poorly.

@Atlanta - second night of a back to back.

Spurs are still winless in their second games of a back to back. Counting on a 33yo Bowen to play stout D as well as fellow old timers Horry, Finley, and NVE to produce could bite the Spurs a few more times this year. Discounting this trend is idiotic.

Neer - you realize that the Spurs are 1/2 game UP on the Pistons on there? After this loss is chalked up, they will be even for the top spot in the NBA?

Doesn't seem to be a trend for the Mavs . . .

Back to back is not an excuse when other teams don't have that problem. Earlier this week the Mavs won two in a row on the road, in a back to back. Your point, guitar?

Clearly the league helping out the Spurs. Conspiracy.

Guitar, I do realize that, but I'd rather go by winning precentage. If you look at GB for teams at the top when one team has played more games, it assumes that the lower team will go 1-1 in the games until they catch up in total games played. Top teams aren't likely to go 1-1 over a span of two games.

Well, we arent talking about the Mav's shortcomings, we are talking about the Spurs shortcomings. And as many of us who have followed the Spurs for many years said before the season started, the Spurs will have problems with back to back games this year, and we have been right. What affects one team negatively wont affect another team negatively.

This will not affect the Mavs as much because their players are generally younger and should be able to handle the wear more. Dirk, Marquis the Lizard, Josh Howard, Devin Brown, Jason Terry. I think the mavs will have more problems when it comes to focus down the stretch.

The Mavs (like all other teams) havent played as many games as the Spurs.

Devp23 is the biggest drama queen on Texags.

Ridiculous rants, claims to be a Duke fan who always goes to games, stupid analysis, etc.

Who is your team next week Devp23?

Seriously, talking smack after each game is sooo retarded. It's a long season. And to repeat myself, NO team can claim to be better than the Spurs right now. The Spurs have the rings. That's all that matters. It's pathetic watching other teams' fans try to come up with convaluted (sp?) arguments for how their team is supposedly better than the reigning champs.

Howard and Terry being two of your best players rather disproves your point on the Mav's dominance. Memphis is not that strong, either.

Atlanta is the type of team that is overlooked by a good team. I would rather San Antonio loses to Atlanta rather than a legitimate threat anyway; the tiebreaker is not going to come up.

I would like to know why you think the Spurs are not as good this year. In your words

The Spurs return every contributer, and added a couple solid players as well.

Well, as long as we're making excuses...

Mavs Losses

@ Utah: Second night of a road back-to-back (after a double OT game the night before, no less)

@ Philly: Dirk gets hurt, doesn't play second half

Memphis: Second night of a back-to-back, Howard gets hurt.

@ Milwaukee: Second night of a road back-to-back, no Howard.

Spurs: Close game, no Howard.

If you honestly believe that the Pistons will go 1-1 in their next two games then you're welcome to look at GB. I don't think that way.

I could really care less who is at the top, because my team isn't. I'm not making an argument for or against any team. I'm just saying what I think makes the best team.

wow booston, you are that stupid . . .

"claims to be a Duke fan who always goes to games"

I am a Duke fan fsince as long as i can remember since my dad and uncle are Duke alums, and now my best friend is also. And since i got accepted into Duke but chose A&M because of money and proimity to home, among othe reasons. However i haven't claimed to allways go to games. I have been to one; i was 6. The next one i am going to is this seaon in Durham verses UNC. Needles to say, i am ecstatic about that game!

It isnt about going 1-1 at all. That is a false premise. To gain a game, the Pistons have to:

1. Win and the Spurs dont play
2. Win and the Spurs lose

The Pistons or Mavs can win all they want, but without the Spurs losing, it doesnt really help them - it only doesnt hurt them.
Devp23
How long do you want to ignore this user?
check his post again, guitar. Our struggles are not back to backs, they are injured players. Looks like you "got owned again."

Also note that in our most recent back to back, because players like Harris have had more experience so they can now reasonably fill the voids of Terry and Howard, we won both games. And "Memphis is not that strong" ??? You are dumb to think this. They currently have one of the best records in the NBA.

Guitar, if one team is 20-4 and another is 19-3, then the teams are tied. In order for them to remain tied in the standings, the 19-3 team would have to go 1-1. Teams at the top of the standings are not likely to do that. Maybe I'm just not explaining myself right. I'm not all here right now, so that is entirely possible. Or we just don't agree which is possible too....

The spurs aren't concerened with their record. They are concerned with getting to the playoffs.
That is their main goal, not to have the best record in the league. Once they get into the playoffs, then they start focussing on winning every game.
