In spite of popular opinion, these guys (NBA players) aren't as selfish as most think:

“I am proud to announce that not only will we meet the [$1 million] obligation, but we decided that our contributions would be no less than the contributions that we made on behalf of the victims of the World Trade Center. While we actually did not publicize that contribution, we actually gave $2.5 million dollars to that relief effort.'

“Steph [Marbury] indicated to me that he’s currently pledging to contribute between $500,000 to one million dollars to the effort, and that he’s assured that that contribution will be made over a few seasons.”

Allan Houston (New York Knicks) “My friend Lindsey Hunter, who lives in Jackson, Miss., called me. He didn’t call Billy Hunter. He didn’t call Feed the Children. He just got a couple of trucks and went down there and helped out people who were coming through the water. We’re supposed to do this. Everyone can do something.”

While it's a nice gesture, I think it's kinda sad that in a league where the average team payroll is 50 million dollars (that's per team, league pay roll is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.5 BILLION per year), Billy Hunter is excited about his players ponying up a combined 1 million.

I think it's ridiculous too. The NFL donated a whopping $1M - as a LEAGUE.

Note: Marbury's donation is a nice gesture.

Going by what I hear on the radio and have read online, the Rockets organization is putting forth a great effort in helping. As part of Hopefest many of the staff are helping to hand out goods and assisting in job hunting. The Comets, who are in the middle of their playoffs, went to visit people in the Astrodome.

More pledges:

'$100,000 from Bryant, the superstar guard of the Los Angeles Lakers, and $60,000 from Golden State Warriors guard Baron Davis, who played for the New Orleans Hornets before being traded in February.

On Wednesday, Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin and wife Irene announced they will kick off the team's Katrina Relief Fund drive with $100,000. All-Star guard Gilbert Arenas bought $18,000 worth of essential clothing and toiletries and delivered them to the D.C. Armory, which is serving as a temporary home for some evacuees.

On Saturday, the Milwaukee Bucks contributed $500,000'
