...whya have a field of 64?

why not just have a field of 32?

this had 8 seeds as the lowest seeds, after all, with all of these years having passed by and an 8 seed being the lowest to ever win the thing, why not just have a field of 32?

stands to reason that 9 seeds and below have no shot to win...and do away with the auto bids to the small conferences...

when was the last non major conference team to win it all, anyway?

You are right. While we are on the subject, we should stop scheduling the Baylor FB game... Honestly, when was the last time they beat us??

Would that be UNLV?
I like the field of 64. Some day one of the cinderellas is going to shock the world.

Or, a team like Gonzaga will get better and better year after year as their name recognition increases. Their seeding will increase year after year, until they are a respectable #2 or #3 seed and make it to the final 4.

The last time the field was 32 teams was 1978.

I have Gonzaga going to the Final Four this year, which should tell you what I think about getting rid of the non-major conferences. The Zags have built a great program and should not be left out.

Louisville (pre Conf-USA) was in the Horizon League and always did well in the tourney, winning it in the mid 80's.

Small schools can have great programs (Villanova, St Johns, Gonzaga, Pepperdine, Coll of Charleston, S. Illinois, UTEP to name a few). Giving them a chance to compete against the big boys is what makes the NCAA tourney so great.

Louisville was actually in the Metro conference prior to the CUSA (which pretty much took the Metro and expanded) and won the Championship in '86 at Reunion in Dallas.

It was a real shame the Final Four didn't come back to Dallas. That was an awesome year for hoops with the NBA All Start game, the Final Four, and then a classic Mavericks/Lakers series -- all at Reunion (except Lakers road games) in the span of 3 months.

LSU went to the Final FOur as an eleven seed

some of the best stories of the tournament are those upsets coming from the lower(?) seeds
