I think there's a very good chance Barnes will be their next coach inspite of what Dickie V. said. If Virginia wants him, I think they can get him.

I guarantee you Virginia would love to have him. I have my doubts, however, whether he would really leave for UVA. If Barnes really wants out of Texas, I think he can do better than Virginia.

I think if he left tu, it would be to get closer to his home. He's from North Carolina.

Yeah, but if he really wanted to be at a lower-half of the ACC team close to his home, then he would have stayed at Clemson. Granted, UVA is a little better program Clemson, but not that much. It could happen, but it doesn't make sense to me.

It depends on the $.

He's a good enough coach to make Virginia competitive with the research triangle and GT. Heck, in the late Cremmons years, GT wasn't that great and now they are at the top of that league.

Virginia did make some final four runs in the early '80s with Ralph Samson.

But what I'm wondering is: why does he want out of Austin, if he indeed does?

personally the only school that makes sense to me for barnes to leave for is IU. reason, he would be top dog in his conference and state.

NCSt. is the 3rd best school in the state. UVa is not really a basketball school.

anyway, we'll see. i think we have a good shot of him staying.

Barnes is not leaving t.u., if they want to keep him. Nobody can outbid t.u..

Virginia is looking to spend $2 million+ apparently.

Barnes and the ACC weren't a very good fit the first time around. They didn't like his style. But it would be a great hire for UVa.

agee, i have a few friends who went to UVa and they make it sound like the fans support football more than basketball. agreed, it is the ACC but that is what they told me. it could be just their opinions but that is what they said.

basically i am saying that it is not a basketball school like duke or UNC or IU with regards to fan support or tradition.

It used to be a basketball school. Football has only recently (since the late Welch era) caught on there. And with their declining hoop fortunes of late, football seems to have caught up.

It's not about money for Rick, it is about Athletic Dept. support.

I think Rick has fueled the talk about leaving and is not just bluffing. He wants to seperate the season tickets for basketball away from being a perk for big donors for football.

I don't think Barnes is bothered by tu being primarily a football school, but he is as bugged as all get out, and properly so in IMHO, that the Basketball program is controlled by the big donors to football who may hvae no real interest in basketball except to give away to certain politicians in Austin for favors.

That's the bug a boo for Barnes. If the Athletic dept. gives in to him and removes the season tickets from the 'big donor' perk package, I think he stays on. If not I think he will walk.

I think you'll find Texas is far superior historically in basketball.

Just because you're not a football school doesn't mean you're a basketball school. Some of these schools are pretty much average all the way around.

I don't think Barnes will go to UVA, but if dude at Indiana gets fired for missing the dance, then sips everywhere should tremble in fear.

I'm not praying for Barnes to leave tu because Dodd has shown that he will hire a coach as good as Barnes. I just think it makes sense. First of all Virginia is much more of a bball school than Clemson, and most important, it's easier to recruit bball players at Virginia than Clemson. If he wants to get closer to his home, this will probably be his best chance unless he feels the N. St. job will eventually open up.

UTex. Please respond to my thread! Look, I could care less if Barnes stays or goes, really. I am happy with Gillispie and where we are heading. I think Barnes is a class guy, but you sips are starting to sound like Bamabubbas with the "NO way Barnes goes anywhere type talk, Yada, Yada"! Their arrogance kept them from seeing the fire behind the smoke!

There is smoke in the tu basketball program concerning Barnes. Is the fire a big fire that will burn out of control, or will Dodd be able to contain it?! Don't know the answer to that yet and won't know till the sips finish post season play. HOwever the reason I listed is a real crux and I don't think Barnes is bluffing. If you sips arrogantly think he is, I think, like Bama with Fran, ya better get ready for a big meltdown!

Didn't Barnes turn down UVA once before???

If Barnes left afte rthis year, it would look very bad on his part. He was the one that took a chance on PJ (grades), and if he can't handle one down season because of a few injuries, then he shouldn't be a highly sought after coach. I don't see why Barnes would leave considering next year looks so promising.

Barnes supposedly accepted the UVa job and then flew back to talk to Providence officials and they "talked" him into staying.

IU has some very good young talent. IU grads I talk with say he'll stay to work with what he has. Nice comeback by the Hoosiers with possibly the toughest SOS in the nation.
