not trying to find things to whine about. and I'm not one of those people thats always on officiating in football or basketball, but the officiating early on in this game was down right terrible.

Agreed, but at least it wasn't biased. It was just bad on both ends.

The only horrible call I saw was when Acie stole the ball at half court for a break away layup and the ref called a kick on t.u. The ref must've been pretty embarrassed for stopping play on that sequence.

Its not so much that they were bad calls. They probably were fouls in a technical sense, but its the ticky-tack variety that they were calling. There were so many fouls called last night that both teams had trouble getting into a rhythym.

The first foul on Wright, I thought it was a bad call but other than that it was pretty even...

I didnt notice the officials all that much despite all the fouls. I think they called a pretty good game.

I am a referee (young, but I am dedicated to what I do)...the calls were tickey-tack, there was some out of area calls (both of these things happen)...but overall it was well done.

That hits the nail on the head...ticky-tack is what I kept saying all night long on calls against both teams. I was the guy (or one of the 100s that kept yelling to let the kids play. Referees should be invisible til something serious happens.

I didn't like the fact that they were calling so many fouls away from the ball.

I've always been a big fan of letting the teams play. They should have let more go (for both teams).

My biggest pet peeve is the pass interference call in football. Officials shouldn't call it half the time they do, I say let'em fight for the ball.

I didn't turn on the TV to watch the officials blow their wistles every second, but we were being very aggresive so we deserved to have more fouls than Texas no doubt.

My feeling is if you're gonna call ticky-tacky fouls, at least call them both ways. The refs did a good job of that in this game. The moving picks and shirt grabbing fouls really hurt us! There were a couple of bad calls, but there are always going to be one or two in a game--none that were monumental.

The encouraging aspect of the game was that we did get ourselves in a lot of foul trouble AND still found a way to stay ahead the entire game and not let it bite us in the end. We are still a young team and they are going to commit fouls. If they do everything else right, however, we'll continue to win games.

Can anyone explain to me (I don't know much, and my GPA is unfortunately reflective of that) why they called a jump ball when two A&M players were fighting for the ball?

agreed. i think that is what has to be encouraging to Gillispie as well. i didn't think the ref'ing was that bad; i think we do foul a lot.
i have read quotes from Gillispie that seem to indicate he'd prefer the hard play ("mistakes" as he often says), damn the consequences, rather than playing soft.
so far, we've been rewarded for it. it hurt us in the KU game, but i still think the calls were fair there; we were definitely the more agressive team.
we'll have to play nasty these first couple of years under G..

I completely agree with this. It seemed like anything under the basket was free game, but if so much as breathed funny away from the ball you were going to get a foul.

I also thought way too many of the fouls were ticky tacky...all I could reason was that the refs wanted to control the game early and keep it under control as they may have thought this game was potentially an explosive situation.
I thought the game was pretty cleanly played by both teams...sure under the boards in those scrums there was some stuff going on, and it seemed there was a lot of over the back on rebounds that was not called.

29-26 is a lot of fouls. That said, I was more ahhed at the total incompency of the officials in reguards to traveling. There were many plays where I saw both teams take 4-5 steps and nothing was called, but then they call Acie for traveling and he didnt even have the ball.

I thought it was amazing how tight they called the first half on us AND THEN allowed us to get away with murder under the basket. We were REALLY hacking guys in the paint at times.

I looked at the recording many times of Leach's "travel" coming down the floor and I can't figure it out. He went up to get the ball and came down with his right foot first, then left and took a step with his right. Is this technically three steps even though his left foot is seemingly a pivot? I was a little confused by the call.

That one ref, you know the one I'm talking about, must have called 20 fouls on us by himself. At one point Gillispie was laughing and clapping, a little Bronx cheering, telling him he made a great call...he kept at it and the ref told him he'd better calm down and back up. Good stuff...I love Gillispie's demeanor on the sideline.

One more thing: is Gillispie teaching a little shirt-grabbing and we're just not good at it yet, or were we just grabbing and shouldn't have been? Methinks it might be the former.

I'll hang up and listen now.
