They've ruled he can play but has to shoot FTs left handed.

The only thing that matters for Pope is the outcome of what's been called the "California Case" (Glancy v NCAA) The next hearing on that is currently scheduled for Sept. 29, so he'll at least be eligible until then.

Some key points of things the NCAA (and/or the SEC are trying to block):

  • Players with any kind of pro contracts: Pope was injured this summer and did not sign any kind of pro contract. Though based on a clarification last night, it seems that the SEC is not going to consider summer-league-only contracts as NBA/G-League contracts, only exhibit 10s, two-ways, and obviously actual NBA and G League contracts.
  • Players who are trying to transfer outside of the official portal window: This is a bit of a wildcard here because I don't think the NCAA's ability to enforce this has really been tested yet. But either way, it does not apply to Pope because he did enter the transfer portal during the postseason window with the expectation that this might happen.
  • SEC to SEC transfers outside the initial portal window: This is another rule that's on the books that it's unclear if they'll try to enforce or not, but it could come up with Mark Mitchell (Missouri to Kentucky) but does not apply to Pope, again because he entered the portal during the correct window.
