Haggerty wore #4 at Memphis and at K-State.
Is he wearing #4 at A&M or is that number retired?

We don't retire numbers (we hang jerseys, but players have worn the numbers later, like Vinson was 4 last year) but yes, he's wearing #4

We should take that numbner down and raise it on our own grounds.

I don't have a problem with honoring Wade and I don't have a problem honoring a player at the end of his career with all his teammates there and the fans that rooted for him them. But you can't just have the current coach making the calls on something like that I don't think. And I don't know who should actually makes that call though. I mean Billy Clyde would have hung Walker's jersey up if they let him.

Great idea. We should hang one random player up every year. My selection for 2026-27 year is, of course, Tomas Ress.

Buzz knew he was leaving and rushed it. That's what bothers me the most. Wade Taylor was a great player but I dont know whose jersey gets hung while they are still playing.

I think a higher standard for hanging numbers would be better than "because Buzz said so." For being a great all-around guy Wade fits what you want in a recognized athlete continuing to represent the school, though. So the decision was reversed shed, had zero criteria because Buzz was trying to do something meaningful for Wade, and we should not pull it down but should review criteria in all sports for recognizing key athletes whose play made a difference in who we are as a program at a school.

Trev can lead that, and the results should point to some external measures like Bob Cousy Award for top point guard and/or consensus first-team All-American recognition and eventually include (hopefully) NC contribution.

But right now those are little lofty for humble Texas A&M and it isn't clear we have the commitment to reach that level. So maybe it just isn't something we should do or maybe Acie and Wade are perfect examples of the best of A&M.

UConn did it for Karaban last year. And Taylor had more individual achievements than Karaban, though obviously he was part of better teams.

My biggest issue was how it was done. If you're going to do it, go all the way. Don't be all secretive about it. Don't stop the fans from rushing the court to celebrate beating the #1 team in the country.

The whole thing smelled like Buzz thinking we were too dumb to ever recognize Taylor on our own so he was going to do it while he had the clout to and he wanted to be here for it. And/or that if he announced it ahead of time there'd be some kind of uproar about it. It was the perfect microcosm of everything wrong about his time here.

I think it's dumb to do it 5-15 years later even if that's what usually happens. If you don't know if you should the year a player is done, then that's probably your answer that it shouldn't. Doing years later you might have 4 players that played with the guy show up, you have a lot of fans who never saw the guy play there, it's just not the same.

But again this can't be solely done by the current coach making the call as you will have 23 jerseys up there in 40 years

I personally would do it the first time the player is available to do it the next season (and/or the first time they're available and you have a halfway decent home game) just because I'm too superstitious and I think it brings weird vibes to the last game of the season. Like if we'd have gotten wiped off the floor by Auburn that whole thing would have been even more extremely awkward than it was in the first place and I don't want to take my best player's mind off the game before the game.

If you're UCONN and the last game probably doesn't matter that's fine to do it before the game, but for example we play Texas for our last home game next year.

You can also just have an event after the season.

So instead we do it before the Bethune-Cookman game when the player is available next year.

You message implying BC is not decent and has been clipped and put up in the BC locker room. Quote shirts are probably being printed to motivate the Wildcats

That's fine, we don't play them this year. I hope they go undefeated. They did win the SWAC regular season last year and then got taken down by PV in the SWAC Tournament. Probably resting on their laurels and reading the newspaper clippings, maybe this will help them refocus for this season.

I think when a player like Acie IV or Wade IV gets their jersey hung we should use an appellation like "the Great" instead of IV to make sure our histories make them stand out from lesser historical figures like Acie I or Wade III

Honestly the conversation around wade Taylor's retired jersey is one of the more frustrating events of buzz tenure. Wade is a good guy and a great player buzz made this about him while trying to give off the image of doing it for Someone else.

Wade was one of my favorites, who else was going to show out and lead the team as well as he did with zero offensive coaching?

We all knew Buzz was an odd duck from the start. But what amazes me is how well he was liked...until all of a sudden he wasn't. It's not like he had a Fran 77-0 moment. Or a Melvin 0-fer season. Or a total meltdown at UCLA like Sumlin did. He didn't lose to Arkansas State and Appalachian State like Sherman and Jimbo did, respectively. He wasn't Joni Taylor or Peggie Gillom horrible. He didn't drive a great program off a cliff like Coach G did in soccer.

Buzz did exactly what we hired him to do. Then he bolted and became Public Enemy #1. Just a very weird situation all the way around...which, in retrospect, should have totally been expected of Buzz.

It's a complicated deal. I will still defend him as being a better coach than some people seem to think he was. I also think Covid made him weirder. But there's a lot of angles to it. He obviously rubbed people within the athletic department the wrong way, which has a way of spilling over to this website.
