Full disclosure - I'm a casual when it comes to basketball

That being said...I'm watching a now 17-4 team that is in first place in the SEC ****ing destroy Georgia on the road this afternoon and the broadcasters are asking "should this be a top-25 team?...is there a case for it? Maybe? Just maybe?...not sure...they are making their case..."

Huh?

How is this even a question and what am I missing? I see the lack wins over AP ranked teams, but still...come on....how is there any question about whether or not the #1 team in the SEC belongs in the top 25?

It's kind of ludicrous.

I dunno, I'm good without being ranked. Keeps us hungry. I'm cool with waiting a few more weeks.

It does kinda matter, doesn't it?

It certainly mattered in football this year.

Not sure how much teeth the AP poll has when it comes to seeding - but I imagine it's not nothing. Eye balls, perception is reality, etc...

We're almost definitely going to be ranked on Monday, but to this point our wins aren't particularly impressive.

Georgia is a big one though and the Auburn one keeps getting better.

Kind of - but not as much in basketball.

1) We started the year unranked and had low expectations. It takes a while to change perceptions.
2) We went 2-3 in non conference against P4 schools. The two wins are against teams with losing records. We have steadily improved throughout the season. Go watch our game against Okie St and you won't believe it is the same team we have now.
3) We have not beaten any of the SEC preseason favorites yet. FL, UK, UT, Bama, Ark.

But don't worry about it because we will definitely be ranked when Monday's poll comes out. Last week we were in the "Receiving Votes" section and ranked 29th.

This season has been amazing! We are overwhelmingly favored to make the tourney (my dream scenario for this season) and legit contenders to win the conference.

Only a couple of our wins are particularly impressive. Specifically, the road games at Texas, Auburn and Georgia. The overtime loss in Knoxville is also a pretty strong result.

However, our 7-1 aggregate record in the SEC, even without having played several of the top teams, is still very high caliber. Very few teams, top 25 included would have an expected record that good having played our schedule. I think the AP is about a week or two behind on us. At the end of the day though, who really cares.

Agreed.

I really liked Buzz and thought losing him was going to be really tough to overcome...

So far it looks like we may have stumbled into a really great coach.

How cool would it be if we had a second Bucky legend in Aggieland?

As of now, he is the winningest coach in our history (pct%wise)

Had we pulled off that 2OT Game at Tennessee, the Aggies would probably be around 15 this Monday.

We have everything in front of us. Could give two craps about AP POLL. refer to Bobinator perfect analysis of how dumb AP IS.

One thing interesting is how different www.kenpom.com is compared to the NCAA NET ranks. And as another poster notedt.U.'s stats appear AWFUL compared to us, but they are only 2 (today) behind us.

We need to win 6 of our last 10 and then we can't be ignored by anyone. If we do that we should be a 3-5 seed. Our conference schedule is not strongnot our fault. Next five games make our season, one way or another. If we can pack REED Saturday night hosting UF, and win, that will go a Long way. Like we did to Auburn last year. Place was crazy.

Our "bad" loss at UCF looks better and better. They beat Kansas and now Tech at home.

Thanking God for Trev having the monster balls to roll the dice on Bucky. Incredible and brave hire.

  • I don't think the selection committee gives any credence to the AP poll
Recruits primarily care about how our season ends as measured by our conference finish and NCAA tournament results
    Same for stakeholders and donors
I don't know what "NIL evaluations" are or why they would care about our mid-season poll position
    Some fans care
    You obviously care
I really don't, I root for us to win as many as we can
texags probably cares and doesn't care in the same manner as fans do or don't

So I guess in fairness to your opinion, we have identified some people for which it matters, but not "kind of a lot".

I'm no expert in basketball either, but I watched two top 10 teams play Friday night in Mich vs Mich St and call me crazy but I think we can play with either one of those teams and would have a decent chance of beating them. Our playing style seems to give teams fits, and we are very well coached in all phases of the game.

I don't think the selection committee cares much, if at all, about AP rankings.

I do agree being ranked is good publicity and will help draw in the non and casual basketball fan portion of our fanbase.

Its better to keep flying under the radar i think. Expectations can be a helluva thing for a new roster to battle with. This is a veteran ball club though so im sure a ranking will boost their ego in knowing that people care about what they have achieved up to this point.

In the large grand scheme of things though rankings dont mean anything towards seeding come March. And even when seeds are announced that doesnt mean they're actually that number in front of their name.

What is more important is to keep improving as a team. We have to keep making plays, play better defense, cut down on silly fouls 94 feet away from the basket, stop turning the ball over and keep believing that we can beat anyone. Sometimes keeping that same belief game after game is improving your game especially when away game wins are so tough to come by.

But make no mistake this is a special team. In my 30 something years of watching A&M basketball, this is the most promising and surprising year in all the years ive been watching our team.

    I am all in.

The AP poll is right in line with what statistical metrics say about us. Actually we'd still be out of the top 25 even after yesterday based on Torvik (#26) and KenPom (#27). But we'll be ranked in the AP come Monday. Stop feeling like we're being slighted. If they keep winning, high rankings will follow.

JMHO, but pollsters have to be wary of ranking our Mens teams highly. A high ranking has historically been almost an absolute prelude to some disastrously bad performances.

But we're heading into kind of a "murderers row" of games. Play well (even if we don't win) in these contests and they will have no choice.

We will know a lot more about this team after Bama and FL.

The funny thing is, had we started the season as a top 15 team we'd probably be a top 15 team right now

That's why polls are stupid: because it matters where you start out

We were completely off the radar in the preseason so we are still unranked

    It's just dumb

How do the metrics rank us?

AFTER yesterday's road spanking yesterday, Torvik (really solid analysis site) moved us up to the 3rd best 7 seed. That is 27th in nation. When you look at our team page and our season trend it shows that the Ags are smokin hot the past few weeks, but this team has some early season turds still weighing down its full body of work.

And when you look at BracketMatrix, practically ALL the rating systems say the same thing about A&M. A red hot team, trending up strong, rated the same as Torvik has us.

Honestly, it won't be a surprise if we aren't ranked headed to Bama.

You can't compare football and basketball when it comes to whether or not you're considered a top 25 team by some. Less than half of the top 25 make the football playoffs. In fact, the 12th ranked team didn't even make the tournament. There were also teams that won their conference tournament, but didnt make the playoffs. Conversely, the top 25 make up just a little over a third of the field in the NCAA basketball tournament. Moreover, if you win your conference tournament (regardless of which of conference that is) you will automatically be in the NCAA tournament.

Yeah. This. I'm guessing people noticed 22-2 on the bottom of their screen and then saw the final score. That probably got some impressions.

Also, the announcers yesterday and the guys in SEC Now were clearly being sarcastic with the "have they proved it" shtick. But they're also SEC homers. As others have pointed out, the metrics which matter to the committee have us about right.

We started conference play very far away from being considered to be ranked, we had a lot of ground to make up and teams in front of us also need to drop for us to move into the rankings. Just keep winning and will take care of itself
