Thought this deserved further discussion! How about Dominguez with a couple easy shots inside the 3 point line, as well as driving in and finding the open man. He only shot 4 three's and 3 two's along with 3 assists, including the lob to Vinson.

A nice adjustment to people playing suffocating defense on him up top. I think we can see a lot of teams giving him the lane to dribble, especially playing high on screens. It'll be interesting to see his all around game continue to grow!

I do think there's a lot of things that worked in this game that won't necessarily work later so I hesitate to draw too many conclusions. Texas sucks on defense, the only SEC team worse than them defensively is Oklahoma.

But Dominguez expanding his game is good to see because teams have to shift their defense to account for him. Get a team out of their defensive routine and things should open up if you can take advantage and move the ball quickly.

I was wondering about that. I don't think he became a European pro just standing behind the arc (maybe he did), so I expect as he gets more comfortable we may see other aspects of his game.


I think some of that also may just come with increased team chemistry. Guys will figure out what lineups they need to step up and do a little more in. We have some lineups that just seem real passive, like they're all waiting for somebody else to do something. It seems that way to me anyways.

I don't think he was trying to open up his game. They were trying to cover him to prevent 3 pt shots. So he was taking what they were giving him.

Yeah but literally everyone we play has been doing that for more than a month now. That was his first game all season with more than two two point attempts and he also was passing the ball to people cutting to the basket more. It might have been because Texas sucks on defense but it was still expanding his game a bit compared to what he's been doing. Now can he do it against actually good defenses? Who knows.

Hell, he is 6'6". Needs to shoot way more 2's when it's there, versus passing. Be our Luka.

Problem with his twos is they he's not athletic at all so he struggles to get shots up around the basket in most games.

He is like the one player I'd give a yellow light in the midrange though just to draw bigger defenders away from the basket.

The two 2's he hit were kinda fading away which is gonna be really difficult to block since he's 6'6, and he looked really comfortable shooting those shots. Any time he's shooting a jumper it looks really good honestly. The main reason those shots are gonna be hard to come by for him is that he's not a great ball handler, and you're probably right that it'll be very difficult for him to get to his spots to get the midrange off against defenses better than Texas

Griffen being aggressive would also help Dominguez. It's hard to play those two at the same time a lot of the time but Griffen has been slowly coming along.

He needs to have an alpha player mindset more often instead of kind of blending into the game a lot of the time.

Griffin and Dominguez are the only 2 I am okay with shooting mid range shots and let them be few and far between

I thought one of the premise of Bucky Ball is no middle range shots; or did I mis-read or misunderstand that? In short, I don't think Bucky wants anyone shooting those mid range shots.

Yeah that's the idea but if you can't score at/around the basket you have to try something to make the defense guard you.

This team we are still learning, but it looked we committed to work it inside and cut to the basket after they kept pressing out on us at the 3 point line. I just can't help but think we didn't get a good coach we got a Great Coach!

Yeah my premise was more along the lines, if we had to shoot a mid range shots, they are the only my people I'd want to do it. Not saying we should shoot them more

Good midrange shooters like Ruben need to take a small amount per game. When he's as open as he was on them it's not a bad shot but more importantly it creates hesitation in their aggressive close outs and can open up more 3s

It's also why I said yellow light. Still needs to be situational. Agee not in the game, late in the shot clock, etc.

I get that taking midrange shots perhaps doesn't meet the overall analytical goals of the team but there are times that you need points any way you can get them to have the best chance to win . Would rather see an open 2 pt mid range shot attempted vs a covered 3 pt shot in some circumstances particularly late in a shot clock or really late in a close game where you may be up (or behind) by a point or two. Game clock could also be a significant factor

Mixing in mid range shots also helps keep defenders honest.

Absolutely, if they overplay you outside the arc that gives you a better opportunity to blow by them and might get you a n open midrange shot, a layup or an assist.

For those who just tuned in midway through the season- coach forbids mid range shots. By the rim or 3s is it. Funny you guys think one of the best shooting teams in college basketball can't shoot twos or you've seen vey purposeful avoidance of 2s all season long.

We have shot 131 of them per the play by play data, about 10% of our total FGs. It's not something we want to do, but against big teams when the shot clock is under 6 or so I don't mind seeing Griffen or Dominguez try one if they're open. Dominguez hit two of them again Texas.

Timestamped the two from the Texas game for you. But the PbP data separates out dunks, layups, and long twos. You might be right that some of the floaters are getting captured as midrange jumpers, but can't be more than a handful of those, and some coaches actually think floaters are the least efficient shot in basketball. I think it was Jay Wright that absolutely hates them.
