A few years back 94chem created the thread below to look at programs across the history of the NCAAT and came up with the following scoring system:

https://texags.com/forums/7/topics/2943507/1

1979 - present:
  • 1 point for tourney appearance
  • 1 point for sweet 16
  • 5 points for final 4
  • 10 points for championship
  • points for season are cumulative (e.g. 17 points for winning it all)

1959 - '78:
  • 1 point for tourney appearance
  • 2 points for a Final 4
  • 5 points for championship
  • points cumulative for season (e.g. 8 points for winning it all)

1939 - '58
  • 1 point for tourney appearance
  • 3 points for championship
  • points cumulative for season (e.g. 4 points for winning it all)

I propose that for this exercise, vacated appearances and titles still count.

I've updated through the 2024 season, and have created the graph below. I'll update the thread with some breakdowns/trends across the different NCAAT eras.

There is another article that is based on a point system. Example is 50 points for national championship since 1960; 10 points for Elite 8 appearances and so on. https://gojoebruin.com/2023/07/26/college-basketball-ranking-the-nine-blue-blood-programs/2

Does this factor in that the NIT tourney used to be more prestigious than the NCAA tourney?

I'm nearly 70 and that hasn't been the case in my lifetime.
