The more I think about it, the more I'm ok with the decision to not shift defensive efforts to Goodine.
When you cook up a plan to take away the other teams best options you always run the risk of a bit player going off but you take your chances that even if someone gets hot, it's unlikely to sustain over the course of a game.

What Goodine did was a very unique outcome. But if you're Buzz it's playing with fire to shift your defensive focus to a bench player that averages less than 5 points a game and free up room for their best players.

The flip side is Phelps going off against OU will be reflected in Bama's game planning.

We didn't shift to him but there was an effort to help off him less and make him dribble in the 2nd half. Much more switching and less over helping from opposite side which was a good adjustment.

Need to keep it up and get back in transition and hopefully not let Sears get to the rim this weekend.

We did a much better job of getting hands in his face. The dude was just flat out on fire.

Just like Zhu, he made a bunch of contested shots. But shoutout to heff for hands up more in the 2nd half (along with Jace, Andy, whoever rotated, just noted H was markedly better in the 2nd)

The problem was the rotations were slow. He was on fire but often a man was in no man's land. Not really covering anyone.

I do think we have to walk a fine line when deciding to shift out of our normal defense which is why we almost never do it. You have to trust that eventually it's going to work. We've seen a few times where teams start hot and everyone loses their minds but as the game goes on their numbers get worse and worse and eventually we've got them basically locked up.

But like method said and I think I said in another thread, we were just out of position too often against Oklahoma in the first half.

Not sure if anyone noticed late in the 1st half, but when Goodine hit one from the corner right in front of our bench, we called a TO and Buzz was all over Wilcher who was in the lane helping on their big and did not rotate back out. He did not see much PT after that chain of events. Pretty sure that is why Zhu played 19 minutes in the 2nd half.

This is exactly right. The other side of it is that while I guarantee OU practiced late game plays with 0 and 15, I doubt they had much if anything for Goodine. I know people think they just role the ball out but at this level, preparation is critical and I'm fairly sure they were not much more prepared for that heater than we were.

I agree but the crazy part is last game is they didn't really cool off, outside of turning it over more. which makes the win more impressive.

The turnovers are part of it though. It's just mentally wearing down the other team. OU definitely stagnated some offensively even if they still made threes at a high percentage.

100% agree, I didn't think they were still shooting well until I saw the team stats after the game, and was surprised by there numbers.
