Add a former player (with a catch) to the roster

This board is too serious and needs some stupid pointless threads to argue on so let's go.

You get to add one former player, from a specific year (ex: 2005 Joseph Jones), to our current roster for maximum improvement.

But there's a twist. I think 2007 Law is such an obvious choice here that to spice things up, the person you choose can't have led the team in scoring (per game) that year.

Who you got?

Off the top of my head I'm thinking 2016 Alex Caruso is a good choice.

2016 Jalen Jones

He'd be our best scorer, our best rebounder, would provide veteran leadership and take some pressure off Eman.

Yeah he's a good choice also, I was kind of back and forth between those two in my head.

Alex is obviously a legend, but he strikes me more as someone you add to a team of good players that helps makes those players better. I think there are better options if you're looking for a guy to be an alpha on a team that otherwise lacks a go-to type of player, especially on the offensive end.

Memories of AC whipping passes on the fast break to guys that aren't even looking for the ball are dancing in my head when I think of him playing on this team

I'm sure Caruso will be a popular choice.

Maybe this will start a pointless debate...despite the stupendous failure of a season, (healthy) 2011-2012 Khris Middleton is tempting...

A couple throwbacks:

1993-94 David Edwards - ball handling, could score and distribute (8 assists a game), although he wasn't a particularly good shooter.

2006-07 Joseph Jones - legit post player we desperately need.

Forced to pick, I'd take Jones.

TD 2018 or AK 2007 (did Davis lead the team in scoring?). We got plenty of guards.

I was thinking AC because to me the thing this team lacks most is someone with an understanding of defenses to be able to set the table. Someone who knows how to probe zones or set up shooters and he's probably the best guy we've had (that didn't lead the team in scoring) at that.

So it was a pick not so much because he was an alpha player, but he could make our current guys a lot better.

I think there's maybe something to be said for an extreme athlete. Having Robert Williams out there on the offensive glass could make a big difference also.

Yeah, 2018 Davis was our leading scorer.

Inside presence of Josh Nebo from 2019-20.

Toughness, grit, and leadership of Dominique Kirk from BCG era.

Nebo was the ppg leader last year.

I did a poor job reading the rules.

Let me add Elonu as my big to replace Nebo.

1986-87 F John Trezvant 10.3 ppg, 6.3 rebounds, 1.8 asts

Todd Holloway, for that matter, but liked Trezvant's rebounding. Crite was best scorer, of course.

Ha, I'm not so sure that 2012 Middleton wouldn't make us even worse. Dude was a HORRIBLE shooter that season. The problem with 2012 Middleton is if you change it to him being fully healthy, then he probably would have led us in scoring also.

2008 Elonu is an intriguing pick. Along the same lines would be like a 2010 Bryan Davis.

AK is probably my answer. Re-watched the double OT game in Austin from 2007 yesterday morning, and man AK was huge in the second half and overtime. AK got 2 fouls before the first media timeout and didn't play much of the first half.

Why AK over Joseph Jones?

This might be dumb but my first reaction was josh Carter 2007.

He was one of mine also. In fact I had him in the example and then changed it because I thought it might be my pick.

Just a stone cold shooter. Reason I didn't go with him is that was really all he could do and if he were on this team it would be pretty easy to take that away.

Gimme Brooks Thompson from the 93-94 season.

Robert Williams might be a decent pick due to shot blocking. Elonu was way better in the post.

Hard to choose between

Seth Curry or Anthony Davis

I can't decide what this team needs more.... a solid big or a guard who can create his own shot on a consistent basis

Either year of Chuck Mitchell

2010 Bryan Davis.
Provides an inside presence and a streak of nastiness that this team could really use.

My other thought would be potentially a guy like 2007 Josh Carter that was nearly automatic from 3. I think he would provide more of a scoring threat that could open up the offense for everyone else.

Needs to be a big... like any of Elonu, Bryan Davis, Tyler Davis, DeAndre Jordan, Williams, AK, even Brazilian who played forever...

I will go with Freshman Tyler Davis on that 2015-2016 Sweet Sixteen team.

That season, he played in 36 games, averaged 22.8 minutes, 11.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg with a great 65.5% FG percentage. And those were not 'good stats on a bad team'. That was a really good basketball team.

You put him in at Center and I think he and Emmanuel Miller could co-exist great. Would address the huge front-court issue that this current team has.

We still wouldn't have very good shooting, but I think this team would have a lot better chance of forming some kind of offensive identity with a fish Tyler.

bobinator
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think the fact that team around him was so good probably helped Davis' numbers. He had a lot of space to work because you couldn't double off of anyone else and he just cleaned up on the offensive boards. And he didn't really have any competition for playing time.

But, he is physically larger than Joe Jones or Bryan Davis. There's something to be said for a legitimate big big.
