I coach at a Charter school and there are a lot of similar benefits there. We can play our kids year around and coach them (not under UIL). Our school is extremely challenging so there is not extra free time but we are not held to UIL rules. Our kids get in to the school through a lottery with siblings given priority so we can't just get anyone in; however, the higher grades have very small wait lists.
We play homeschool teams as well as private schools.
It's been very eye opening.
AAU teams are how kids get noticed. Why would a college coach come to a 6a game where they can see 2 maybe 3 D1 kids? When they can go to an AAU tournament and see 400 D1 kids? UIL is a deterrent to these kids getting scholarships.
