Will be in Lafayette next week for kid Pony baseball tourney and I have a few rec's for eats but wondering if anyone has any good ideas.

We're staying in the River Ranch area and will play ball in Youngsville so places near-ish those would be preferred. We have reservations at the Cajun Table on that Wednesday but that's about all we have planned.

Prejeans is outstanding. I based my Gumbo off of theirs

For sure have to hit up Bon Temps Grill, Uncle T's Oyster Bar, Jolie's Louisiana Bistro, Johnsons Boucaniere, Cafe Vermilionville.

My wife goes there frequently for business and recommends T Coons for breakfast and spoonbills. I try to get her to bring me back beer from Parish.

If you don't get poboys from Old Tyme Grocery you wasted a trip. If you like donuts, Meche's are probably the best I ever had. Judice Inn had good burgers.

Prejeans is tourist hokey, but the food is legit.

Best Stop at exit 97 for smoked boudin to take home. Big multi pack in cellophane that is frozen. Toss in the cooler. Get some boudin balls for the drive.

Prejeans is touristy and hokey. The food wasn't legit for a very long time, but I understand they have new management as of the last year or so?? Perhaps I should try it again.

Cajun Table is good, T-Coons is legit, Vermillionville, Dupuy's in Abbeville, Shucks, Uncle T's, Pops Poboys. All good. Little regional chain Zea's Rotisserie is actually pretty good.

Pass on Don's. Pass on Old Tyme.

Ok real secret and the single best Sushi I've ever had in my life and I've had some real fancy sushi (for someone who's never been to Japan,)…

Oishi Sushi. I think they're take out only, but Hawaiian roll, Rodney roll, LT roll, Julie roll, cucumber crab salad… Look. Thank me later.

I respect them all and I'm glad you like them but brother we have very different taste! Can't stand all three of them!!

Another vote for Olde Time, Bon Temps, and Meche's. Best Stop is great and Billy's is great and both of their boudin balls are very good but different from each other.

Louisiana Crawfish Time on verot school road has drive thru crawfish and the assorted fixins if you want something quick.

Haven't seen Laura's Two mentioned. Go there for lunch, especially on a day when they have the stuffed turkey wing. It is absolutely amazing if you're looking for that home cooking/soul food type of cooking. Probably a top 5 meal of my lifetime. Don't let the location/storefront hinder you at all. Just do it.

On the opposite end of the scale....I believe the Popeyes on Pinhook close to a hospital is the last remaining all you can eat Popeyes.

Awesome recommendations y'all. I'm jazzed to chow down.

Does Dixie beer or Jax still exist? If not what are the real coonasses drinking these days? Local stuff? I remember drinking Blackened Voodoo in college on a trip to NOLA in 1994 ostensibly for the A&M / LSU game. Not sure if it was good or just cheap.

Crawfish Time is closed for the season. Popeyes buffet is still there though!

Oh and try Rachael's Cafe. Now that is some legit local cajun country food.

Thanks, I couldn't remember if they were strictly seasonal or what...I spent a few weeks there a couple springs ago and am going on memory.

You're right though… When open, some of the best crawfish in town and the rest of the menu ain't bad either. My cousin worked a boil pot for the one on Ridge Rd. Not really the same outfit but both called Crawfish Time!

My mind was blown, drive thru Cajun boil? Hell yeah. What's better than cruising through town in a rental car snacking on red potatoes on the way back to the hotel?

It's not as bad as you think. They put it in little takeout containers. I stayed away from shellfish this time because I stunk out my hotel room with leftover smothered cabbage a day or two before and leftover shellfish just sounds terrible. The potatoes, sausage and corn do alright as leftovers.

Dixie beer has been rebranded to Faubourg.

If you're looking for something a little different than Cajun, we had a great lunch at Romacelli Bistro in the River Ranch area last year while in town for a wedding.

Parish Brewing has good beers like Canebrake, Parish Pilsner, and some if their Berliner Weisse beers.

Just reading about Faubourg and the rebranding. I guess Faubourg Lager is the old, basic Dixie beer.

We really enjoyed our visit to Parish Brewing. We also liked the Tap Room in the River Ranch area. Nice comfortable beer place with bar food.

While we are at it, how about in or neighboring Shreveport?

Gumbo, charbroiled oysters, beignets?

Honest question from a native Houstonian. I've always assumed that part of the state is less like S. LA and isn't so much into Cajun/creole food. Maybe this is false or maybe you're joking (and confirming my assumption). Can't tell.

Shreveport is kind of ass. Not a whole lot of anything worth a damn there in my opinion, but I'm willing to be proven wrong. South LA has it way better than North LA. I'm with you, it's not even comparable. It's basically east Texas.

This has always been my understanding. Drove through there once a million years ago (as a child) and all I remember is the smell of sulfur.

Wait, the question about cajun food in Shreveport wasn't a joke? That place is an armpit as well as about as far from cajun as it gets while still in state lines.

The only good bbq is in central texas! Breakfast taco? Austin or it sucks!! Pizza, nyc or gtfo!!! Right?! In the presence of brilliance, I see.

Ooooorrrr, the area actually associates with culture more like Arkansas and Oklahoma rather than Acadiana. As such you're more likely to find beef dishes and casseroles on home cooks tables than etouffees or stews.

I understand your contempt, but it's like asking for good cajun food in Tokyo or Melbourne. They largely don't consider themselves cajun so… it's hit or miss.
ME85
How long do you want to ignore this user?
sort yourself out. The question was simply about restaurants…not about how much cajun is in town.
