This board and the Outdoor board are both going to get you good info.

Best bet is to just scan through a few pages on each board or use Google power with site: www.texags.com

Here's a recent one on this board:

https://texags.com/forums/67/topics/3106327

On the Outdoor board scroll towards the bottom of the first page and find the "brisket feedback" thread - there was some Traeger discussion there.

I cut my teeth on an old school Oklahoma Joe offset smoker and it's still what I use at home.

But I bought a pellet grill for my vacation property because it's used by the extended family and many don't smoke, so I saw it as a versatile option to allow for smoking and grilling without much fuss.

I ended up buying whatever the bigger, top model of Pit Boss is. I think it's the competition 1100 or 1200 or something. The reviews on it made me think it wasn't worth spending extra on a Traeger and I was right. It's a pretty well made piece of equipment and the value proposition is very good.

The surprising thing to me is that it's exceeded my expectations as a smoker. I just posted on another thread about it but I did a high and fast brisket on it recently that was among the best briskets I've ever done.

I cook a lot of ribs and once I figured out the quirks the ribs have been turning out good as well.

There is a feature which allows you to slide open the smoke plate above the firebox and get some direct flame searing for doing steaks, which comes in handy.

It's a bit of a pain to clean, but so is my Okie Joe offset so I'm not sure I've lost much there.

I've really been happy with the purchase. People who talk down about pellet grills are overly romanticizing everything that goes into traditional smokers. Or maybe there are pellet grills out there that don't do a good smoke, I don't know. But to me it's just a tool. It has a lot of benefits and not a whole lot of drawbacks.

One frustrating thing I just remedied was that there is a protective grid over the pellet hopper which I guess is there to keep someone from dropping a big chunk of wood or something into the auger. This makes it a pain to pour and/or mix the pellets around. I recently removed it by taking out about 6 easily removable screws, and now I don't have to deal with that frustration anymore.

Check out the Yoder YS640s or YS480s pellet grills. We went thru multiple brands (Including Pitts and spitts) before we landed with Yoder and we couldn't be more pleased. Heavy duty construction, great temp range (150-600), direct sear capability with the 2 pc diffuser (plus easier access to burn pot), 10 year warranty on body, 3 year warranty bumper to bumper, WiFi FireBoard built in. The grill is awesome. We have used it to cook ribs, brisket, smoked salsa, sear fajitas, and more. Probably the most versatile unit we have overall

We have them in stock and on display in Woodlands area north Houston.

We have had a Traeger for about 7 years. It does a solid job of smoking.

+1 on the Pit Boss. I didn't go for the 1100. I just got the 820 but it works like a champ. I have done about 4-5 smokes on it and everything has come out great. Couple of briskets, ribs, drumsticks, and steaks. I will echo what was said above, it is a little harder and more tedious to clean, but well worth it. Holds a steady temp like a champ.

One tip I've started doing on cleaning is that if I'm not going to be using the flame sear opening I have been covering that entire broiler plate (the entire piece below the grates) with foil before a cook, and then I just throw the foil away and can skip cleaning that at least.

Good tip. I will give that a try this Sunday. Cooking a brisket for Mothers Day.

Installed a Memphis in an outdoor kitchen I built in 2015....best investment I ever made in a kitchen. Briskets, ribs, turkeys, chicken, fish, baking. You name it, you can do it on this pellet grill.

In a new house and waiting for my contractor to come out of the Covid backlog to install the smaller Memphis.

I was one of those guys that said i would never get a pellet smoker. Well, technically thats true...i got a Pit Boss smoker as a gift.
Man....the stuff i make on it is better than anything i made on an offset. Its so easy to use. The pellets are 15 bux for 40# at walmart....thats the only negative. Shopping at walmart.

I highly recommend Pit Boss.
