I haven't made ice cream in many years but will be making a couple batches for the 4th of July.

Is there a great standard base/ custard or are most recipes flavor-specific?

Philadelphia style doesn't have eggs, its close to soft serve in texture, make sure you get the milk powder.

Classic custard if that's more your style.

Alton Brown's 9-8-3-2-1 recipe is solid for a richer ice cream.

Stella Parks at Serious Eats made several no-churn recipes that are supposed to be very good.
