Let me start off by saying I love sardines, whether in a can or fresh big ones. Today I saw canned sardines marked as "wild caught". Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all sardines wild caught? Is this akin to the gluten free steaks and sausage I see?

Angelo parodi sardines.
Best so far.

Yes, they're all wild caught. And probably the most sustainable seafood going.

Sardines can be sustainable, but the Monterey Bay aquarium's seafood watch only rates the Pacific ones as a best choice, and their score is not as good as other seafood. The Mediterranean ones are rated "avoid". And:

Currently, the Pacific sardine fishery is closed because the population numbers are too low.
Nevertheless, you could do a lot worse on the sustainability ratings than sardines.

I'd guess that one of the most sustainable seafoods is farmed mussels.

Well that situation has certainly changed since last time I paid any attention.

It's hard to keep up. I thought squid would be rated better than they are.

Maybe if we only ate invasive species like lionfish and asian carp?

From what I can tell, the campaign to make nutria popular hasn't really taken off.

I don't know about carp, but I read somewhere that lionfish are pretty tasty.

there is a place in Omaha Nebraska that sells fried carp and they are delicious. They were on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.

How I get the wife out of the house as she hates them. Love sardines canned or nicely grilled fresh ones.

The campaign had serious image problems

Quote:

While still in Jackson, Louisiana, I teamed up with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries and launched the challenging campaign to market nutria. Because nutria was eroding the coastline by eating vegetation in the marsh, LDWF approached me to assist with menu and marketing solutions. The bottom line: nutria eradication was needed before severe damage was done.
...
Then one day, out of nowhere, the late Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee decided to use nutria as practice targets for his officers. Shortly thereafter, local media reported that nutria was seen in New Orleans gutters. Nutria, at this point, was being publicized as a nuisance species. Within days from the headlines, our efforts to sustain a nutria market were shot down.

I'd eat nutria before tilapia.
