Anyone have any? Do you recommend them?

Anyone care to share the pros and cons to using them?T

Thanks

just make big, hard and clear ice spheres.

Our water here in the hill country sucks.

With water softness and filters, I've never seen "clear" ice.

Thanks for the info.

Freeze distilled water in one of these. Best thing you can do for chilling your whiskey and helping it open up a little bit.

I've better luck with those monster cubes.

I thought the OP was referring to the little granite cubes that you keep in freezer and put in a bourbon glass. If so, Pros: look cool. Cons: if you put them back in felt bag while still wet, from rinsing off, they come out next time with small bits of felt on them. Also, they're kind of scary when you tip the glass for that last sip.

OP is talking about the granite cubes that look cool but don't actually chill your whiskey.

Like what everyone else has said... They look cool, and it's a good idea... They just don't work.

I think they do work. I don't want my whisky too cold. They cool it just a tad bit.

Definitely won't make the whiskey cold. Slightly cooler w/o watering down. I love the big ice cube mold - sphere looks awesome, but can't make 6 at a time.

Can't comment on those cubes but this is what I use:

Comes with the glass and works like a champ. Basically a mini shot block.

Don't work at all.

If you insist on cold whiskey, put the bottle in the fridge. Or chill the glass.

Do they even look cool, really? Especially if you have the knowledge that they suck, aesthetics aside.

Yes. Next question?

My next question is if Sooner Born is an investor in whiskey stones or something, because after re-reading I've found that Sooner Born was actually the only one saying they looked cool, with the caveat of them not working.

Or did you just buy some as an Xmas gift and now worrying you're the only one who likes them?

I am a disappointed owner of said stones. I couldn't even detect a change in temp when using them...but damn did I look cool when I did.

just some interesting reading on the various cooling methods. science seems to confirm my thoughts that the ice ball may be slightly more optimal, but mostly just looks cooler and is more hassle than its worth unless you just want it.

also, I guess I will post the obligatory:

The only thing you should be putting in your whiskey is more whiskey

Last Christmas one person gave me a set of the stone whiskey chillers. Vermont soapstone I believe. Another friend gave me a set of stainless steel cubes that have some sort of liquid in them. The actual rocks I don't much care for. The metal cubes get the whiskey much colder and aren't as bad about wanting to tumble out of the glass on the last drink. And they look cooler. Usually, I just use ice, but some scotches I don't want diluted at all.

Get the Tovolo ice sphere molds from bed bath and beyond. Got my friends some fore Xmas and they have been a big hit so far.

The third post seems to show that the liquid-filled stainless works well. This makes sense based on the idea that more of the cooling comes from the heat of fusion (phase change) rather than jut the heat capacity if the material.

This makes me think that you could just use ice frozen in a plastic bag. But that would look uncool.

Great discussion here. I loved it and looking for more interesting and information discussions here.

Plus I'd be worried about what the alcohol would do to the plastic in the bag. But yea, from a thermodynamic perspective it's shocking how much of the heat transfer of melting ice actually comes during the phase change versus the temperature change of the ice and then resulting water.

my "whiskey" stones seem to work just fine. I just use a couple more per glass than recommended by the box. but I don't want my drink ice cold either...just in the 40s or so.
