How many Ags know about this stuff?

Tried it for the first time the other day and spent today buying as many bottle of it as I could.

I have had Pappy 10,12,15,20 and 23....Black Maple Hill is the only thing that has ever come close to Pappy 20, IMO.

Call your local liquor store and thank me later (good luck finding some in Austin though, they are 10 bottles light after today!)

Well I was probably going to buy some bourbon this weekend so I'll see if my local specs has it.

Dont think Specs carries it, at least the ones in Austin don't.

A non-Specs liquor store!? I'd have to think pretty hard to come up with one.

At least one where getting gut stabbed wasn't a possibility.

Hmm I actually noticed this stuff at a small liquor store I was at this evening picking up a new beer. Guess I should have bought a bottle. I'm sure they'll have it for a little while longer.

I had some a couple of years ago. Yup, it's mighty tasty. It's been too long for me to remember anything more than that.

Very good. Specs on airport carried it but they have been out lately.

I was at one of my local stops a week ago and they had 5 to 6 bottles on the shelf. I'll go back and see if they do and let you guys know. I've got a bottle myself and it is good stuff.

Found this backstory interesting. Still want to try it, though. I don't care where it comes from as long as it's delicious:

quote:
While not nearly as romantic as the Van Winkle legend, Black Maple Hill is slowly becoming the next "must have" Bourbon, mostly for the reasons I mentioned above. I'll get customers in the store asking about it, I'll tell them they should grab what they need now, other customers overhear the conversation (mostly because I have a loud voice), and all of a sudden I'm selling Black Maple Hill to people who didn't intend on buying any. It's exciting to feel like you're getting in on something special, but there's nothing really special about Black Maple Hill. It's a quality, everyday Bourbon that currently has trouble sourcing enough supply. What it does have, however, is the makings of a cult whiskey, and that's exactly what's happening. Here's the magic formula:

1) It has a wonderfully romantic label, much like the Van Winkle's with Pappy smoking the cigar. The sketch of the Kentucky forest, the script writing, the rustic look, etc.

2) It has a fantastic name. Most people think Black Maple Hill is a place or a distillery. What a magical place that must be! It makes you want to go there and drink Bourbon, surrounded by the eponymous maple trees.

3) It's contents are unknown. No one but the blenders know how old it is or what it's made from. All we know is that it tastes good.

4) It's now becoming difficult to get due to supply shortages and that makes people want it even more!

The truth is that Black Maple Hill is neither a distillery nor a place of origin. It's an independent label owned by my friend Paul Joseph in San Carlos, down the road from our store. He's got a garage full of other booze too (Murray McDavid, Alchemist, etc.) and every month or so I'll stop by to see what's new. Paul pays Kentucky Bourbon Distillers (Willett, Vintage 17, Pure Kentucky, Noah's Mill, Rowan's Creek, etc.) to make this blend for him and then he slaps the label on it. So, in reality, Black Maple Hill is a Bourbon that's blended in Kentucky, but owned by a nice man on the San Francisco peninsula.

All Spec's in San Antonio are empty. They did locate 20 bottles about an hour ago at:
STORE #160; 4720 Bryant Irvin, Fort Worth, Texas 76132; 817-423-8400.

If you are in the area you can thank me by shipping me a bottle or 2!!

Just scored a couple bottles of the 16 yr reserve....gonna pour a glass tonight.

Heard this stuff is better than Pappy20.

@ Boris the Blade -

If your 16 year bottle says "Single Barrel" you hit the jackpot. That would have probably been bottled by Van Winkle and probably taste a lot like Pappy.

If it says 16 year "Small Batch" (most recent bottling), it probably contains Heaven Hill juice and does not have the same flavor profile as the Pappy. Good for sure, but different.

Did you have to pay in the ballpark of $160/bottle?

It is but from when its opened to about a year later, it goes from "pretty good" to wondering if you'll ever taste a bourbon so good.

Picked up a bottle of the 6 (I assume...there's not actually a date or anything anywhere on the bottle) over the weekend on account of this thread. Pretty good stuff! Just a slight touch of sweetness on the front end and really, really smooth throughout.

Now I will join the others in trying to track down a bottle of the 16.

Josh, will double check the bottle tonight if it says "single Barrel" or not.

Good lawd the 16 is good though. Makes it hard to go back to my other stuff!

Hmmm, some folks have Book Club. We seem to have ourselves Bourbon Club. I was at Twin Liquors and since I saw the one bottle by its lonesome, I bought it. Anyone else?

Damn, mine is small batch. Scary to think that the single barrel might be even better than this stuff.

Mighty fine sipping whiskey for $41. Lots of caramel and honey goodness. Blows away many things at this price point and above.

Looks like Specs actually has it listed on their website now. I'll be calling them today to see if they have it in SA.

I went to the San Antonio Specs yesterday, and the guy said they haven't ever had a single bottle in stock. He check the computer and said the Smith St store in Houston had 45 bottles in. I called a friend in Houston and he went there about an hour and a half later. Completely sold out.

If anyone would be willing to grab me a bottle or two and ship it, I can paypal you and give you a little extra for your trouble.

^^ That is the basic small batch that Specs had in stock the other day for $40. Not sure why everybody is running out to get it though??

Because we are herd creatures, that's why. Plus, see the excerpt from the blog post since we're doing the same thing mentioned. Of course, it's kind of fun to try something new.

We should do a Bourbon club where a different poster picks a different bottle each month or quarter so we can all go out and try it and share our thoughts. There are worse things we could spend our time and money on.
