Here is my little German grandmother's recipe for sweet rice, in case there are any good German-Texans in here who enjoy it as much as I do. I put this recipe together from watching Grandma when I was a kid, along with a good amount of experimentation. It turns out exactly like what she used to make, and it is delicious.

Hilma's Sweet Rice

Ingredients

1 Cup White Rice
2 Cups Water
1/2 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Milk
1 Tablespoon Butter
1 Dash Ground Cinnamon

Bring water to boil, add rice and reduce heat to low, cooking for 20 minutes or until rice is cooked. Remove rice from heat. Stir in the butter. Add the milk. Add the sugar. Put rice over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent burning. Do not cover. Cook the milk down until the rice is nice and creamy. When finished, pour the rice into a bowl to serve. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top and serve.

My grandma cooks hers in a double boiler to prevent burning. It takes about 2.5 hours.

is there a version of this that would use brown sugar as the main sweetener?

You could try brown sugar. I'm sure it would taste good.

well ok that was a dumb question the way i worded it

i guess what i meant is, do you think any of the wet ingredients would need to be toned down with the switch from white to brown sugar?

That's the same recipe my mom makes or at least similar. We always have it during the holidays and sometimes she makes it as a side dish with other meals throughout the year. She doesn't measure out ingredients though except for the rice. Funny thing is that you have to have a heavy enough pot or it doesn't taste quite right/as good. That might be something to keep in mind. My mom uses a heavy aluminum (probably not good, I know) pot from the 70's era.

I don't think I would change anything for brown sugar, other than maybe the amount of sugar. Just do it to taste.

I actually never measure anything when I make it, either, but my aunt asked me for the recipe a couple of years ago, so I paid attention and measured everything out for her.

I'm curious to know if this is really only a German-Texan dish or some kind of regional thing. Growing up only our family has made it and everyone else hasn't even heard of sweet rice that we mention it to. For those of you that grew up on it like my family did, where are you guys from? I'm from Bryan and my family started off in Kurten when they migrated to the states. My moms family, according to my dad, is from the Giddings area and both families are of German decent. I need to ask my mom which side of the family the recipe comes from because I never gave much thought to it before.

My mom is from Iowa (Danish ancestry) and they made this as well. Shortly after marriage, my dad (from New Orleans) asked for rice with his dinner. She made sweet rice...Not what he was expecting!

My grandparents are Argentinian. They make "arroz con leche" which sounds like the same thing. I start with about a cup of rice and a quart of milk, sugar, cinnamon stick and some lemon rind. It is sooooo wonderful.

My grandmother used to make it all the time. She grew up in Marlin.

Edit to add: My whole family is German.

My German family was from New Ulm. Lots of folks around there made it.

Interestingly, there are similar recipes in other cultures. A co-worker of mine from India makes a similar dish, but instead of cinnamon, she uses cardamom, I believe.

It's also similar to many rice pudding recipes.

This is one of my favorite things to have for breakfast. My mom used to make it for us when we were kids. Now I make it for my kids.

My grandmother use to make that. Better be one of the first in line if you wanted any because it went fast.

I've had professional cowboy chuckwagon cooks make the same thing from very old recipes but used canned condensed milk (cow in a can). They also made it with raisins and called it Spotted Pup.

Anyone else's mom make it in the microwave? My mom hasn't made it in years but I never remember her making it on the stove.

My German side of the family is from Washington County. I never remember eating plain rice growing up, we always had sweet rice as a side.
