Howdy - cross post with Outdoor board here.

I recently inherited a Japanese rifle from WWII (6,5x51). My grandfather brought it home and passed it on to my dad. I believe it was last fired in the 80s and have always been told it needs a new firing pin to be operational again.

I inherited the rifle a few months ago and would like to get it operational again. Hoping OB / Military boards have a recommendation for a gunsmith who could take a look at it.

I live outside of austin and am frequently in College Station. Happy to travel further to have this done properly.

Preemptively stating - I'm not interested in selling it. It's been in my family for 80+ years and we are all veterans so its value to me is priceless.

This store is in La Grange. Less than two months ago, I dropped off my inherited WWII Japanese rifle, 6.5mm for inspection and testing.
The store owner, Andy, checked it and test fired. Great service.

Nice rifle. About a year and a half ago, there was an auction for a ton of stuff owned by Larry McMurtry. I didn't really care that he had owned it, but there was a Japanese Arisaka Type 99 in 7.7mm, last ditch version, that had paperwork indicating it had been used on Tarawa. Since my dad had fought there, I wanted to bid on it. I did an online bid, and forgot to check on it, and I think the auction ended on Memorial Day and I forgot all about it. Regret I failed to follow up.

Somewhere upstairs, I have a Type 99 (I belkieve) that my FIL brought home after serving in the Philippines and then in occupied Japan. I don't even know if it can be fired. I ought to check into what it's worth and/or clean it up and see if I can find any ammo for it.

I wonder when the military stop letting Soldiers bring home their rifles haha

I can't imagine bringing home my M4 from the Arms Room. The whole base would be on lockdown.

My D-I-L's granddad was ranking officer on Ulithi Atoll during WWII (Navy LT & MD). As such, the island's Chief made him Asst Chief so the Chief could demand things rather than ask for thing like supplies since asking for things was below his status. Anyway, the Chief gave him a captured Samuri sword and Jap rifle. Doc wrapped it in brown paper and mailed it home! The thing was still wrapped in that paper last I saw it before he died. He also had his issued 1911 with belt & holster he was wearing when he got off boat to process out. No one ever asked for it and he didn't know what to do with it so he wore it all the way home. The thing only got shot when he had to qualify the first time so it was pristine!
Three great souvenirs of the war in the Pacific, not to mention his binders of duplicate official photos taken on the atoll (as senior officer, he got one for his files and Navy Archives got the other copy. One of the photos was the one of our carriers all lined up getting ready to do invasion on Japan…the pinto is affectionately known as "Murderer's Row".

Wish he had a better selection. Only been in there once, but Andy comes across as a really good dude.

If you haven't addressed the issue yet, give JMS Tactical in Burton a call. I don't know the dude's expertise with foreign weaponry, but he works on a lot of Garands and other WWII era firearms.
