There was further embarrassment because of the VIP on the flight.

I was TDY to Bitburg in the 70s. We were cautioned that the runways at Bitburg and Spangdahlem, which was just a few miles away, were essentially parallel. Make sure you were aligned with the correct one! I remember someone landing an F-4, and on roll out, realized the base was on his right, while at Spang it would have been on the left.

I can't find the AIB offhand, and it might not be available on a non NIPR desktop anyway.

But these dudes were on day 7 or 8 of a trip, multiple near max flight duty periods (24 hours instead of the 10 the FAA gets), were only supposed to have a total of 10ish hours duty period this day and instead got alerted to a day with a 12 hour flight (at least 16 hour duty period) including at least 30 minutes on the boom for AR over the North Atlantic that wasn't planned for.

They ****ed up, but not acknowledging the context of the situation is ignorance at best or willful omission to take a shot at dudes that signed up to serve their country at worst.

Happens even to the commercial guys. And it's not an OV-1 Mohawk, I have no idea where that titie came from.

Well, there is a blurry Mo-chicken in the foreground of the second camera shot of the DC-8. Kind of off-topic, but I was briefly assigned to a unit that flew Mohawks in Germany, until VII Corps G-1 figured out I wasn't supposed to be there...

The guy who posted the video flew OV-1 Mohawks in Vietnam, and this was his home base. He has a few more Vietnam videos on Youtube

Sitting in the civilian terminal in Charleston, SC. Watched a C-130 take off. Had a pretty good land mark on where the 130 rotated. A couple of minutes later a C-17 lines up to to depart. It's take off roll was shorter than the 130. Then Boeing's 747 Dream Lifter got on the runway. It's take off role wasn't much further than the 130.

Huge amount of thrust!

Still get a kick out of watching a C-17 back up under its own power.

That's about the only part of it I enjoy. Backing is a real pain, but especially if I have to do it at random civilian fields it's always a hit.

I was elated to see the C-17 that would fly me out of Iraq.
