In 1776 Washington had only a few thousand Continental Soldiers. Therefore, he avoided decisive engagements and battles with the much larger British army until he crossed the Delaware River on Christmas Day. Those few thousand soldiers wanted to fight, and the many privations did not deter them. They were cold, had little food, sometimes poorly equipped, and underpaid. But fight they did. We owe our independence to them. We were infinitely close to losing the war in 1776, but those brave soldiers kept us in the fight and shaped conditions for the country to believe it could win the war.
