Poor SOBs. Sounds like just about the worst place on the planet to be stationed.

They are already there, it's just a re-flagging for current units stations at JBAD. Everyone I have ever talk to who was stationed there either loved it or couldn't wait to get out of there.

I've heard nothing but good things about Alaska. Some old
NCOs loved Richardson when it was just an airborne task force (late 90s/early afternoon 2000s) and more recently my buddies who went to Fairbanks loved it. Some have come and gone and went back.

Was stationed at JBER and it was really nice, especially if you like to hunt and fish. Hell it was so nice I don't think I knew any E-7 at 17 years or O-5 at 17 (or almost all the O-6s there) that wasn't trying to stay and retire out of there.

Back in the 80s, Alaska was paying every citizen an annual dividend from State oil revenue. A family of four could rake in a pretty good annual windfall. Half the Army changed their home of record to Alaska.

Yep still going on when I was there in 2015, there are a couple of stipulations now and they REALLY emphasis it at the inbrief, pretty sure now you have to "swear" to return and retire to Alaska, or the state will come back and take ALL your PFD (including all your children amount they were paid over the years) I think there is a difference in claiming it as your "state of legal residence" (good for no income tax just like Texas) and actually doing that, owning a house and collecting the PFD every year for you and every member of your family.
