The Department of the Navy considered disbanding the Marine Corps in the 1930s. The Marine Corps essentially asked who would conduct the amphibious landings? The Navy said you have a point. The decision was propitious as the Marines conducted numerous amphibious operations in the Pacific. How nations prepare for future wars is paramount. Sometimes it is based on good or bad doctrine and good and ineffective technology. Unfortunately many Marines became casualties as the US reclaimed islands and the survivors would spend the rest of their lives trying to forget what they experienced.
