Godson is preparing to commission; any thoughts on good gifts?

My folks got me a senior boot display case. Kind of pricey but it looks very sharp.

my parents bought me a box of cigars
my old lady's parents bought him a bottle of Blue Label

An Aggie flag so that he can send back pictures of him posing with it on his new adventures!

- His rank shulder boards for his ASUs when he commissions
- If you know his branch, something specific. I have a stained glass framed with my branch insignia that goes from house to house and is always hung up on a window.
- A Silver Dollar before he commissions
- Letterhead or card stock (so he remembers to write home to mom and pop)
- If he knows what unit he is going to maybe a good or old first edition book on the unit...in flight school my roomate had all the history of the ACR he was slated to...DVDs, books, etc.

I'd personally stay away from Aggie stuff...he is moving on to a new part of his life that he probably doens't have much to show for just yet.

Second all of this, or MS Power Point & Excell classes.

When I got commissioned as a second lieutenant I was extremely proud to have the title Marine. My mother bought me a small statue that I could put on my desk, that's a fairly famous depiction of a Vietnam Era infantryman.

I would imagine regardless of the branch of service, anything that reflects his becoming a member of a new brotherhood in arms would be appreciated. Think small desk item.
