Is it true that for every year you are a member of the Aggie Band, one year of NCAA eligibility is used?? For example, if I was in the band for 3 years, and I wanted to go play football, I would only have 1 year of eligibility to play?

I heard this from several current band cadets and I'm wanting to find out if it's true or not.

Sounds like a fairy tale or "Good Bull" story.

Or possibly simply, "Bull***t".

I know when my kid played DI sports, I had to pay $50 to NCAA to assure she was academically qualified to play.

When you have to pay that $50 to NCAA to be a BQ, let me know.

Here's a link to the 431 page NCAA bylaws. If you can find me ANYTHING in there that says being in any band uses up NCAA eligibility, I'll eat the whole paper manual.

Story I heard when I was a cadet was that the band was considered a varsity sport, which is why they go to the football games for free (apparently all athletes can go to any game of any sport for free).

I would assume that is where this eligibility thing comes from that you're speaking of. I also doubt that it's true.

FTAB is a 1-hour kinesiology class.

That's the technical academic requirements. That's like saying ROTC is nothing more than a 3-hour class.

The way I see it, if someone were to spend 5 years at a university and be in the band all 5 years, would the NCAA say anything about it since you only get 4 years of NCAA eligibility? No. That's dumb. Why would they care how many years some kid has been in a marching band?

Well, the band is a lot more athletic than some of the teams we have fielded over the years!

Ditto on BQ75's post. I remember in my 4 year era several guys of various Maroon/White Band classes who, had there been a 12th Man Kickoff Team back then, could have had an excellant chance to make the squad. Several guys were AA or smaller All District football types, some who had played against scholarship members of the Aggie football team while in HS.

The 'donut' deal didn't exist back in the day. We had some truly mean/scary guys back then. Trust me.
